The "Gindukush" was one of the Soviet ships that never got completed in Mykolaiv. She was a 7000 ton rescue ship who could deploy helicopters, deep diving uuv vehicles, and divers. Given what we now know of the seabed warfare capabilities of the USSR, it seems almost certain to me that she would have had the capacity to be employed in this way. Laid down in 89, scrapped in 96. I would love to know more about the ship, or see a diagram or illustration

The project would appear to analogous to a direct replacement for the Don class submarine tenders, the last of which left service only 2 years before the Kursk submarine marine disaster. It's quite obvious why rescue would be emphasized in the wake of various late Cold War submarine losses. Given current events, it's easy to ascribe a more nefarious seabed role, although Russia has always had plenty of more clandestined assets for that sort of mission. Overall, this design is a bit shorter and beamier than a Don, but very much the same general sign and superficial layout.
