This is not a design by Robert Carling.

The generic concept here was by aerodynamicist P.R. Payne (who also wrote under the pseudonym 'John Halifax]). This was his take on an earlier critique in Flight of aircraft layouts by Robert Carling. Whereas the latter was discussing larger aircraft types, Payne was trying to apply the same layout to what he called the "light 'family' flyabout".

Obviously Flight editorial staff were more than a little dubious - note their insert box :D
