A friend mentioned that a new tank is being built for the British Army, possibly by a German firm.
I did Google searches for Challenger and Scimitar replacement but nothing much came back. ???

Have this been discussed on here yet and what details should I be looking for?

Perhabs he means the Boxer project ?

The new British tank is part of the FRES program and will be based on the Specialist Vehicle (SV) chassis. The GDUK bid of the ASCOD SV an evolved GDLS Europe Ulhan/Pizzaro IFV was selected as the FRES SV. This is originally a joint Austrian-Spanish vehicle but has come a long way since then. It has a German MTU/Renk powerpack, the same as the Puma from memory. The medium tank version is yet to be revealed or designed in detail but will probably be a turreted 120mm gun on the ASCOD SV hull and weigh in at up to 42 tonnes.

Thanks for that guys, the FRES program and GDUK bid sounds like it.

Can't help but be reminded of the Scorpion/Scimitar/Samson/Striker family in the aims of this project.

No shock there -- FRES is intended specifically as a replacement for the Scorpion family (and some other vehicles as well, but Scorpion was the initial target).

Maybe your friend referred to the ongoing project of putting a Rheinmetall 120 mm smoothbore in the turret of the Challenger? The rifled 120 mm is getting a bit outdated, and ammo is getting hard to come by. Re-arming with a smoothbore will ensure commonality wiht a lot of other armies.

Had a chat and it is the GDUK thing he saw in the Metro ages ago.

The Rheinmetall program makes sense as long as we still have tanks to fit them to.....

Ammunition for the L30 is no longer hard to come by, that was sorted years ago.
