What happens when Mitsubishi and Lockheed Martin form a joint venture to build a F-22J Super Raptor for Japan? Does Lockheed Martin also build the F-22/F-35 hybrid for the United States Air Force to address the 194 aircraft shortfall?

What shortfall do you think needs to be addressed that is not already in the works?

Before the USAF jumps into the land of the 6th gen fighter I would think that it would be much more sensible to go down the route of a 5th gen plus style of aircraft, before spending billions of dollars into developing a 6th generation fighter that will probably face the same fate as the F-22.

I think that is what they are doing with all of the F-35 upgrades, including the advanced engine. Whatever comes out of the Japanese RFP will moist certainly fall into this category.

Why would it face the same fate as the F-22?

As interesting as the F-22 and F-35 are, this is veering further and further off topic.

Guys ... could we please on topic?

Any further discussion on Japanese efforts, LM proposal for a hybrid F-22&-35 and so on are off.

It is an interesting conversation... Maybe a moderator could spin it into a new thread.

Why not starting a new thread on your own?

Is there any more to this than some hope of LM being able to fulfil what the Japanese want? Do the Japanese want an F35 for this job? Surely the title should include the UK offering and possibly Boeings input?

mrmalaya,
There is already a thread on the next generation programme (prospective F-3 here): https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,11566.105.html

But for the moment this F-22/-35-hybrid is IMO a bit different ...

https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Lockheed-offers-Japan-majority-of-work-in-plan-for-new-fighter-jet

So in summary, what do we have to think about this type?

Could it be indeed a F-22V.2 with systems from the F-35? ... and all that despite production-tooling and so are probably no longer existent?

Supposedly they saved all the tooling and process documentation. (Though I have my doubts. Seems at one point they opened a container that was suppose to have Tool X and it wasn't there.)
