MBB/CATIC MPC-75 (DAA92/122, Regioliner R92/122, FASA)

Does anyone have an idea of how far this project was/is related to the recent ARJ-21, which had its roll-out today ?? Only a predecessor with a "similar" configuration ... ??

I believe that the ARJ-21 has a closer affinity with the Shanghai-built MD-82/'83s.
 
MBB in 1987 was trying to move choppers into China, which at that time was talking to Sikorsky and was licensing Frelon and Dauphin into 2 factories. One was Harbin, Badger-sett. Integration of MBB with Aerospatiale as Eurocopter was not then as it is today. MPC-75 was an invention to lure CATIC into choppers. MBB had no more track record in such things than did China. Discussions collapsed over money and the idea died. After AVIC was split into 1 and 2, Harbin licenced ERJ-145, and Shanghai et al. are doing ARJ-21. There is unlikely to be any cross-fertilisation, because they have read the text book about creative internal tension.

Japan Also Studies Joint Development of MPC75

Arao, representative director and Tateyama, managing director of the SJAC
visited China from 3 to 8 October, and exchanged views with members of the
CATIC (China Aerotechnology Import and Export Corp.). A problem of joint
development and production of 30 or 40 seat commuter airplanes has been
discussed with Chinese members since last year. But, this problem has been
shelved for the present, because it has been clarified that the number of
airplanes does not reach the demand number aimed at the Sino-Japanese mutual
market; the time is not ripe for promoting joint development and production
plan. The CATIC tries to develop the MPC75, a 60 or 85 seat passenger
airplane in collaboration with MBB (Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm) in West
Germany. The CATIC has recommended Japan participate in the development plan
instead of the above plan.

For this reason, the SJAC will hold a China Project Promotion Special
Committee (chairman: Yoshio Sasaki, chief director of Aircraft and Special
Vehicle Headquarters of MHI) and will study this new plan in the near future.
