Gorgeus drawings to an extreme interesting subject which is all that design effort at Hawker. Thanks again Mr Miranda for sharing your indefatigable talent with us.

Hi,

on the Tempest's French Wikipedia page,

is wrote :

Hawker Tempest PW2800: An interim prototype of the Tempest fitted with the Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engine. This version was developed due to the unreliability of the Saber engine and the unavailability of the Bristol Centaurus.

I have never seen this version of the plane anywhere.

Is this fake news? And if not, does anyone on the forum have a photo or image or any other info on this device?

Perhaps confusing Tempest development with one of the briefly-considered Tornado engine options?

There was a Hawker scheme for alternative engines for the Tornado airframe which included the Bristol Centaurus (ultimately fitted to P5224), Fairey Monarch, and an American radial. Some sources mistakenly say 'R-2800' but most say Wright Duplex Cyclone (R-3350). That concept died in July 1941 by which time Tornado prototype contracts were being slid over to the Tempest.

There is a Tempest II restoration which swapped the Centaurus for a R-2800, which gives an idea of what an R-2800-engined Tempest might have look like ...
