An interesting report to see here, and equally interesting that such 'flaps' always slightly predate or approximate real aviation technology at the time. The original 'airship flaps' of the 1800's. 'Foo Fighters' and the Ghost Rocket phenomena at the advent of guided missile, rocket or bomb flight. Kenneth Arnolds 'Flying Saucers' (more like flying wings or ellipticals) at or about the advent of early flying wing and swept wing shaped jets. The infamous 'Black Triangles' after (I think) the development of th F-117A and other still unknown Black Project aircraft of roughly triangular planform.

And more laterly perhaps the in-ordinately large (usually silent) Triangular/Rectangular/other football-field sized (and in some cases even larger) 'moving starfield' type vehicles mostly reported from the American mid-west. Predating in that case knowledge (in the Public Domain at least) of U.S Military interest in large airship type vehicles like Lockheeds P-791, the DARPA ISIS and other unknowns...

I guess there's always been 'Black Projects' of sorts.
