Following and being followed

G'day folks, being an old git I am not exactly up on all the 'trends' and slang. I had a notification that someone who joined yesterday is 'following' me and it is all a bit weird.

Why 'follow' anyone and especially as the member following me joined yesterday? As I menitoned all this following and stuff just seems odd to me.
