ORIGINAL CAPTION: Capt Sir Tom said it was "the most special of days for me"

The Queen personally praised Capt Sir Tom, telling him: "Thank you so much, an amazing amount of money you raised."

In May, Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a special nomination for the war veteran to be knighted.

Buckingham Palace believes it is the first time the ceremony has been held in the strictly socially distanced format.

The Queen used the sword that belonged to her father, George VI, to bestow the insignia of Knight Bachelor upon Capt Sir Tom.

Her arrival was announced by the sound of bagpipes played by the Queen's Piper, Pipe Major Richard Grisdale, of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Not to take away from the moment but I have to laugh: The Queen's new way of practising social distancing...;)

Not that new.

She's the Plague Queen.

:(

Hopefully he will pull through, with the help of God.
Hopefully he'll pull through with the help of science. Much more reliable. Far fewer plagues and rains of blood and swarms of locusts.

The crowds may not have been be able to line the streets to bid him farewell, but Captain Sir Tom Moore today got the send off he so richly deserves for his contribution to the work of the NHS.

A Second World War-era plane soared over Sir Tom's funeral service as soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment carried his coffin to the crematorium.

The C-47 Dakota, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, performed the flypast, recalling the moment last year when Sir Tom punched the air in delight as a Spitfire flew over his home to mark his 100th birthday.

A firing party, a bugler and a ceremonial guard also formed part of the service, which was only attended by Sir Tom's immediate family in accordance with Covid restrictions.
