How so? What interest do these individuals have in say bringing down the F-35 program?

I swear APA is one of the Russian defense industry's best unpaid PR teams. Going by their combat scenarios, it seems Russian ECM and missiles always work, unlike American designs. :

of an F-18D pilot visiting Malaysia, and his experiences with mock combat with the Su-30MKM

TLDR
within the Malaysian Air Force, there's a rivalry between the Flanker and Hornet pilots on who represents the best fighter for the country (sorry Fulcrum!)
the two don't interact much with each other as they are stationed in totally different areas
Hornet guy appreciated how the Flanker doesn't have to deal with drag penalty of fuel tanks.
He was bested by the Flanker a few times
and he beat the flanker a few times in close combat engagements
