Are there any high res images within the hands of members of this venue that relate to engine test bed aircraft? Here's two examples. -SP

The most unusual conversions were three B-17Gs converted to engine test beds. The nose section was removed and replaced with a strengthened mount for a fifth engine. The Pratt & Whitney XT-34, Wright XT-35, Wright R-3350 and Allison T-56 engines were all flight tested on JB-17Gs.
From http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=2455
Wright's R3350 was a radial piston-engine, that leaves the Allison T-56. I guess.

Source for XT-34: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-17_Flying_Fortress#See_also I think this is the same configuration as shown in Steve's first picture.

At least I will try: is there any picture of the Tu-16LL with the AL-41F engine? I saw some photos of the Tu-16LL itself, but not any with that particular engine.

The B-47 engine test bed for the Orenda Iroquois engine for the planned Avro Arrow Mk.2 interceptor I always thought was a bit cool. Newbie here and to forums in general but it's easy enough to find photos for it.

The book 'Soviet and Russian testbed aircraft' has ca 10 pages of photos of the Tu-16LL, but none with this engine.

Ilyushin Il-76LL registered RA-76529 at Farnborough on 6 September 1994.

Fitted with a D-236T propfan it was awaiting the cutters torch at Zhukovsky in the summer of 2002.

THere is always the B-47 loaned to Avro Canada to test the Iroquois Engine intended for the Arrow. I read somewhere that the engine was so strong it actually caused damage to the B-47 aircraft fuselage. I would have to look where I read that.

Before that Boeing 707, Pratt & Whitney of Canada used a tri-motor Beechcraft 18 Expeditor to test fly prototypes of their PT6A small turboprop engine (1960s). The nose-mounted PT6A-20 only made about 550 horsepower, so the Beech 18 retained both of its wing-mounted P&W R-985 radial engines.
