I found these photos in late 1940s magazines, but nowhere else.
The configuration reminds us of the series of light flying boats designed by David Thurston: Grumman Tadpole, Colonial Skimmer, Lake Buccaneer, Thurston Teal, Seafire, etc., but Thurston did not mention the Bunyard in either of his books.

Thanks for providing that link to photos of NX33170. It really does look like a Volmer Sportsman with a tapered wing more like a Lake Amphibian.
