When I was a kid I borrowed from the library a rather big book on space, and it had awesome art and illustrations, running the gamut from speculative diagrams of lifeforms on worlds with different gravity, starships being sucked into black holes, and generally tons of imaginative speculation on future space travel with ships, colonies etc. It wasn't a sci-fi book at all though, but factual so I guess that some of you are probably into that kind of stuff too and could recognize the book. It's probably an 80's book so too old for the library still to have it.

Hi!

And what is the language of the book and country of edition? ;)

Since I'm in sweden it was in swedish, but I'm quite certain it's an english/american book originally.

I think you might mean the Terran Trade Authority series. Yeah we had a related thread on here about that a while back. It was about Peter Elson, one of the illustrators. http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8278.0.html

Here you go, hope this helps. It's a Wiki page on the books: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terran_Trade_Authority

PS- Here's the cover for one of the books.

Nope, not the one though this looks interesting and it's the same style of art. I distinctly remember a big yellow starship that sort of looked like a toad, if that helps.

Actually, this is the reprint of the original.

I have the original -- which was subtitled "2000 - 2100" and it spawned two sequels, "Great Space Battles" and "Spacewreck".

Essentially, author Stewart Cowley took paintings form SF books and wrapped stories around them. When I was 14, these were cool.

THREE sequels, "Great Space Battles", "Spacewreck", and "Starliners", and I've still got 'em all.......

cheers,
Robin.

Sorry can't help you with a title, but I'm pretty sure your referring to a book I remember seeing during my school days, it would have been 76/77 when I saw it, pre Star Wars. The image that always stuck with me was the one of a big star ship being sucked into a black hole. The rear half of the ship was still intact but the front half was breaking up and disappearing into the black hole.

The covers shown above look very much like the work of the artist that illustrated the covers of Asimovs work from the late 70's.

Hmm, based on the descriptions concerning the cover artwork as well as the contents, the most likely match is 'The Science in Science Fiction' by Peter Nicholls, which was published in 1983:
