Why was this MBDA project for precision guided rounds for 60mm, 81mm & 120mm mortars cancelled in 2006?
Was it due to a technical problem with the FOG at launch or in target acquisition, or to funding problems?
FOG technology appears to work with German, Israeli & US missiles, but the harder launch from a mortar tube might be problematic.
Does anyone have any info on ALFO other than that available online?

Fiber optic as in a long wire trailing behind the missile?

The glass fibre is supported by a mechanical support (such as a mechanically strong fibre or a coating) in such applications.
It's not under stress by a pulling missile, but rather floats in the air.

There are less troubles with powerlines, water etc. than with copper wires.

You don't need anything as complicated as a mortar for such weapons. Eg Israeli SPIKE-NLOS, AKA 'Exactor' in UK service.
