This video features old news reels about the successes and failures of early aviation oddities, including: a windmill plane, flying barrel, spindle plane, potato bug, tailless airplane, aerobike, ornithopter, sky-car, rocket glider and more.

"C.L. Snyder's Flying Wing" is very similar to the XF5U flying flapjack,

"The Flying Umbrella" is pretty cool looking too, not that I'd necessarily want to fly it...

the 'Snyder Flying Wing' is the ancestor of the 'Arup' series of planes...

cheers,
Robin.

I think it's not the ancestor of the Arup, it is the Arup, as you can see from the name painted on the tail. It was later modified with an aditional horizontal stabilizer.

A clarification, the 'Snyder flying wing' is usually taken to mean the Snyder Glider, which was the first aircraft designed by Dr. Snyder, see attached. When later fitted with an engine, it was briefly known as the 'Monowing', before being named the 'Arup no.1'
The aircraft seen in flateric's video is the 'Arup no.2' which was designed from scratch as a powered aeroplane, and to my knowledge at least, was always referred to as an Arup.
See 'Those Amazing Arups', Aeroplane Monthly, july 1979, pp.340-5

cheers,
Robin.
