I just come cross some pictures on line. These pictures come form "M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, 1982-92" By Steven J. Zaloga, Peter Sarson.

I am looking for higher quality pictures, designation/name and tech data.

Thanks in advance
Regards

Xiaofan

These vehicles are (from top to bottom):

(1) GDLS private venture ARV based on the M1 Abrams hull. Not ordered thanks to the M1 compatible M88A2 Hercules version of the old M88 ARV.

(2) BMY M1 Heavy Assault Bridge (HAB) of 1984 using the old M60 AVLB bridging gear. Rejected by the US Army in favour of:

(3) The prototype M1 HAB with MAN Leguan bridging gear that has entered limited production as the M104 Wolverine.

(4) M1 Surrogate Research Vehicle (SRV) used to test electro-optical situational awareness and target acquistion concepts.

Was there ever any discussion of an Abrams combat engineering vehicle variant with a demolition gun like the 165mm on the old M728? Since the US Army lacked a dedicated HE shell for the 120mm gun for a long time it seems like such a vehicle could have been quite useful for removing obstructions in many of the operations the Abrams has been involved in.

On the other hand, HE-OR has been operational on Abrams for multiple decades now, and would be replaced by the new AMP round, so there's never been a pressing need for a dedicated HESH replacement I suppose.
