Why do production Skyhawks feature a longer fuselage than the original A4D mockup? Since weight saving was a key requirement and many other Douglas designs feature a more cantilevered rear tail/control section why was the exhaust lengthened to a position flush with the rear of the rudder?

in 'combat aircraft designer', (heinemann/rausa, Janes), page 219, ed heinemann writes:-

'later on, basic alterations to my rough proposal included the addition of a tail pipe and extending the fuselage. the additional length would be offset by reduction in base drag.'

hope this helps,

cheers,
Robin.
