With respect to the ANT prefix designations for prewar Tupolev designs, I was reading the book Unflown Wings when I found that ANT-8 was also used for the MRT-1 project for a maritime reconnaissance/torpedo flying boat, and that ANT-18 was re-used for a single-engined fighter plane that was assigned the designation I-12. Thus, two different Tupolev fighter projects of the early 30s used the designation I-12, and two different flying boats used the designation ANT-8. This reminds me of the situation where ANT-29 was used for both the DIP fighter and a civilian derivative of the ANT-27. Didn't the Tupolev design bureau have a fixed policy of using ANT prefix designations for more than one aircraft?

Hi Vahe,

no,the Tupolev use many policies from its beginning, and when the company see that design
has not attractive order,it can use it again in anther design, that was clear from many Russian
companies, but for your discovering, that's new,but if you can scan those pages and send them,
that help us more.

Hi all

New Tu-214 version. Russian MOD ordered two Tu-214PU-SBUS aircraft in 2015.

Re: Reply #51

Does "Zakaz" have a particular meaning in the Russian language? Thanks, Harry

Returning to ANT-18. This designation was used for the I-12 fighter project with one M-29 engine, conventional fuselage and APK cannons under the wing.

ANT-18 (I-12)
Didn't know that ANT-18 was re-used for a Tupolev fighter plane project until I got a copy of Unflown Wings, considering that ANT-18 was first used for a Tupolev ground-attack aircraft.

As I know,

Tu-132 was first allocated to a low-level bomber Project,maybe a subsonic
speed,1958

Tu-132 was second allocated to a low-level supersonic bomber Project,
1960

The Tu-136 was allocated to 7 aircraft;

Tu-136 (1) was aerospace rocket plane Project of 1950,powered by two engines
Tu-136 (2) was a small version of Tu-95,Project
Tu-136 (3) was a VTOL single seat fighter Project, powered by one engine
Tu-136 (4) was a passenger jet airliner project, powered by two engined,
mounted on pylons under the wing
Tu-136 (5) was a regional passenger aircraft, powered by two turboprop engines, and and the fuel a liquefied gas, differs from below
Tu-136 (6) was a LNG fuel development of the Tu-130,powered by two
turboprop engines,Fuel carried above the rear fuselage
Tu-136 (7) was a Tupolev concentrated on ways to introduce LNG as a fuel.
With a domestic feeder role envisaged, this Tu-136 could carry over 50 passengers with a range of about 2,000 km. Like the Tu-130(2) it featured
the distinctive side pod arrangement. Engines would be two Klimov TV7-
117SF turboprops

Any information about the Tupolev ANT-201 'Gorostas'. Was it real?
BS. Before posting something from alternate history with a 'maiden flight in 1955' and '4 radio operators and 4 navigators' could you turn on some minor logic and to not post it?

Keep calm and carry on! ;)
As there were four sides of worlds, each needs attention of the dedicated navigator and radio operators. Small size of tail surfaces have been chosen according to high level of precision and power, provide by three pilots.
1500 passengers would be really happy to see, how this "another" wonder-of-the-world taking off from the water surface.
P.S. There were some rumors about "zwilling" version of this amazing flying boat: ANT-402. Designed with the help of captured German engineers.
P.P.S. Sorry, I'm too serious, too much technical details, that should still been hidden. Just read and forget. Please!

I find the dismissive replies uncalled-for. Not all of us are experts, and not all of us are polite, either. I did not claim it was real, nor even think it is. I wondered if it was in any way linked to real projects. If not, it is nevertheless a wonderful art-work and idea.

Hi, foiling!

First time I see the picture of giant flying boat, I feel that it's not inspire me, like some other "alternative" projects. In my humble opinion, the overall configuration of this 3-view hasn't any visual similarities with Tupolev's design. And vertical emennage is too small in comparison to, say, Saro SR-45 Princess, or other flying boats of same class. Then, ANT-201 designation is invovincing - why it's used for postwar aircraft, when "Tu" designation used?
And last, but not least: I'm trying to find translation to "Gorostas"... It's "Giant" on Serbian or on Croatian languages.

So, this "alternative project" lacks some important features, that could made me interested in the ideas of it's creators. However, if someone made it, we could discuss it, but I kindly suggest to transfer it in another forum's section.

As far as I knew, one of the last Tupolev's project of "classic" flying boat was the "504" project of intercontinental bomber. But perhaps, someone dream abouts it's peacuful usage
