Au fait, was the silent propulsion system Clancy own, pure fantasy ? Or is there some sound engineering behind it ?

The salinity is fine, the problem is in the power and weight of the magnets. Now, it won't work in water with a salinity below a certain level, so it can't be used in fresh water, but that's not why it isn't currently viable for certain applications.

I do believe there was a problem with unwanted electrolysis, creating gas bubbles and unwanted sounds. Hardly a good thing for a would be stealthy submarine.

Careful. In the text version, it's not an electromagnetic drive, just a pump-jet arrangement with very long inlet and outlet tunnels.

Also very embarassing in an elevator.
