Wow. That's quite the interesting design. I wouldn't mind seeing a CG model of this...

My tedious-meeting CAS preliminary-design doodles come out looking like that sometimes.

I wonder how well it would have worked as a low cost A-4 replacement? Especially flying from carriers.

Hi.

SAAB A-37 ideas?

Early drawing circa 1961 purporting to be the Saab A-37 with kind of double delta showing two outboard swivelling jet engines midway along the wing?
Was this a VTOL design?

The Saab engine of choice for the single engine proposal was originally a RR engine possibly a licensed built Medway?

Can any one help details of these proposals?

Hi,

here is the SAAB R 1001 jet fighter drawing of 1945,which later developed
into J 29,it had a mid-high straight wing of thin section,a fat barrel-like a
fuselage and sticking out above and beyond it,a slim tail boom.

Many thanks for your efforts, Mikhael ! ;)

SAAB project 1418 is our first testbed for 3D printing, too. Certainly part of model will be improved due to notes of testers. But as I like Sweden ( 10 years I was working in one IT Sweden company here in Slovakia and I took part on a lot of sitting with Absolut vodka) I like this projects family and I suppose to fill full collection of these unique projects

IPMS Stockholm hasa Swedish what-if discussion but P1642-06 seems to have been real ... a part of projekt/studie 'Flygplan 80'

"SAAB Project: 1642-06 FLP Klass B3LM, drawing from December in 1974. During B3LA epoch designed it actually an A-10-like draft, entitled 1642-06, class B3LM. Length around 12 m, span around 11 meters, 2 J-85 engines (the same as in the SAAB 105Ö)."

Similarity really is striking and it's hard to believe, that there was no influence

I know about the so-called "parallel thinking" theories, which in many cases are true... yet in this particular case, the front view is just too blatantly similar to the A-10 for it not to have been done with prior knowledge of the "Hog"...

Fairchild and SAAB did co-operate on a number of projects, if I'm not mistaken.

Was there a lot of cooperation before the 1979 agreement on the SF340?

It doesn't seem too odd for Saab to have done this even without Fairchild. The A-10 was flown in 1972 and selected by the USAF in 1973, so it makes sense that Saab might run a design study using the same basic concept in 1974, if only to explore the potential of the configuration.

... or maybe it was a design study, similar to those mentioned here
http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9225.msg84166.html#msg84166 ?
For a relatively small, like that from Sweden, a dedicated ground attack aircraft may be hard
to justify and would chew off resources needed elsewhere.
So, maybe that study was just a kind of examination, what the net results of such an aircraft
in the inventory would be. Could somehow explain, that a proven solution was used, certainly
easing the task.

Of course my dear Grey,

such as SAAB-Fairchild SF440,but no more details are known, and may be developed from SF340.

Hi,

I never saw like the fighter in lower section.

Yes my dear Jemiba,

it was from 1300s designation as I think.

Would be very interesting to find out more and substantiate the Saab P1642 design!!

Pioneer
