Here's another one that's been bothering me.
Has anyone come across any pictures of this machine?
I know most of the facts about it and have seen a line drawing of it. It was captured by the West and was mostly complete. I'm kinda curious if anyone took pictures of it before it disappeared. I want to see just how far it was along. ;D

My source, the magazine FLUGZEUG 3/93, may be wrong, but it says,
that the Ar 234 V-16, WerkNr. (production number) 130026, was
destroyed in May 1945. ???

Hi Akaikaze
Not the one you mention but...I just happen to have a few profiles ...

Hope they help
Cheers

Hi,

here is some Arado Ar.234 variants and the Ar.234C towed fuel tank,
by the way,the Fieseler also had a design for twin boom aircraft, towed
a fuel tank.

Re: Rare Aircraft

The mentioned article about the Ar 234 B-2/N showed the photo of the nose with
the FuG 218 antennas and several photos of the internal arrangement of the radar
installation. The radar observer was placed, where in the recce version were the
cameras ad just before the wing a hump-like fairing for the Naxos antenna was placed.
A sidevie was shown, too, but this is very faint and scanning brought no reasonable
results .

Re: Re: Rare Aircraft

Thanks Justo !
BTW, the article in Jet & Prop mentions, that small circular windows were cut
into the fuselage for the radar observer, to give him at least some degree of
outward vision. Honestly, I couldn't see this on the photos, but their quality was
relatively poor.

Re: Re: Rare Aircraft

Thanks guys. Re the Ar 234 B-2/N, neither the pictures Jemiba posted or Justo's drawing show quite the same radar antenna arrangement as the picture I posted though. Not trying to be picky, but my question related more to whether that particular picture was real rather than whether or not there were Ar 234 nightfighters (sorry if I wasn't clear). If for no other reason, I would imagine the picture shown would hinder forward visibility a great deal.

Regards,

Greg

Re: Re: Rare Aircraft

The mentioned article showed the same photo of the nose, so I didn't post it again.
I regard this and the other photos as authentic, proving that there really was such
a conversion, although not really a service type.

Had a look through the "Luftfahrt Dokumente" issue (a special issue of the "Luftfahrt International"
magazine) and found two versions of the Ar 234, I hadn't actually noticed before: A single-seat fighter
and a solely rocket powered short range reconnaissance aircraft. Must admit, both versions were shown
here, but still yet I was more sceptical about them. Interesting (for me), that obviously the Ar 234, although
in most cases described as the first jet bomber, was designed from the beginning as a kind of MRCA and not
just as a bomber or recce aircraft.

(Edit : I moved this thread to the Early Projects Section and changed the title somewaht. as most variants
shown remained projects, or prototypes, at best)

Nice to see this thread again...

A couple of questions:

- I remember reading that the Mg-151s were often removed to save weight, and that the under-engine bomb-racks were often not used for the same reason. However, I can't find the source - does anyone else know about this?

- I know that some of the later recon birds carried drop-tanks. However, I was wondering if any records suggest/show that a bomb could be carried under the central fuselage, while drop-tanks were still carried under the wings?

In Luftfahrtdokumente LD 21 about the Ar 234 I only found a photo of the V-9 carrying three bombs and
another one with auxiliary tanks under the nacelles (only the R-Geräte/JATO were carried directly under
the wing), proving, that those hardpoints were plumbed. If the configuration you described was actually
used couldn't find, but it sound likely, judging the relatively restricted range.

Thanks - so possible but undocumented...

Anyone have an idea where I might have read about the Mg-151s being deleted to save weight?

Have looked through the LD issue and other articles I have, bu without success. Maybe no wonder, as more or less
all are just about development, but not specifically about service history of that aircraft. And I would think, that removing
the rearward firing guns probably was just a fiekd modification. Maybe the greatest effect was achieved by the then logical
removal of the rearward looking periscope, which certainly added some drag ? Could be a clue maybe, searching for photos
of service aircraft without it .

Hi,

and here is from the book; Strahlflugzeug Arado Ar.234 Blitz, how they study
the shape of swept wing for this aircraft from 1943 to 1945.

The deletion of the rear firing guns was definitely a field modification - I remember that much.

Avimimus said:

This type of defensive weapons seem not to have been regarded as very useful (neither by the German,
nor by other airforces), although with regards to an original report, published in a Luftfahrt International issue,
aiming and accuracy actually was easy and precise.

About the different proposed wing types maybe an excerpt from the German text may be interesting:
The type II wing should be tested on an Ar 234C-3 (V 26) from february 1945 onwards, as well as the
type III wing on the V 30 (a C-3 variant, too). The V 31 and 32 were intended to be used for those tests,
too, but although jigs for the wings were already under construction, no set of wings could be built before
the end of the war.

There are some funny mistakes in these drawings. For example, the Ar 234 with Hs 293 A is drawn after an original German scheme explaining, why Hs 293 A cannot be carried by Ar 234 in this fashion. :)
