Project 478

From Avión July 1956

German engineers were working on delta fighters at OKB-2 in Podberezhye (Noth of Moscow). Their main project was a fighter called Project 478. OKB director would have been Siegfried Günter from Heinkel. By March 1950, the tunnel model was ready and they were working on the powerplant integration. The powerplant consisted in 4 rocket engines. In August 195, Project 478 was considered obsolete compared with contemporary Soviet achievements. It was cancelled and all German enginers were returned back home.

Any idea if this project was real or not?

Except for the project number, this sounds exactly like the Type 468 which was a single seat, delta winged interceptor powered by four rocket motors and designed by German engineers at OKB-2 at Podberez'ye in 1949. A full size model for gliding and wind tunnel tests was built in 1950 but was never flown because the OKB was suddenly closed in June 1951. Full details are in Tony Buttler's "Soviet Secret Projects - Fighters"

Thanks a lot McGreig ;)

I toke a look at Soviet Secret Projects and that's it!. The Type 468 was incorrectly identified with the number 478 by occidental press in 1956.

What is this aircraft ?.
Projects Type "466-468-486" Other name DFS-468-486
By now the OKB-2’s team leader Hans Rossing had working alongside him a Russian counterpart called A.Ya.Bereznjak (afterwards S.M.Alexeev), together with a well-known engineer from the former Heinkel company called Siegfried Gunter.

OKB-2’s design team therefore began looking at new ideas for an interceptor and the result was the single-seat Type 468 started in1949.
This was a delta-winged aircraft that had 60 degrees of sweep on the leading edge, a huge single
swept fin and two more fins on the underside of the wing that might possibly have doubled as skids for landing. (on 468), and one fin on the underside of fuselage (on 486)
The glider, known as the Type 466, was expected to reach a maximum speed of 500km/h (311 mph) and in appearance it looked very similar to the 468. It was built in 1950 and tested in the full-size wind tunnel operated by TsAGI, but it was never flown because very suddenly, in June
1951, OKB-2 was closed and disbanded. Work on the 468; 486 was brought to an end many of the Bureau’s engineers were transferred to rocket work.

Several days back MOIN -1900, already searched for information on this
the plane. Though model shown by him was distant from reality and was based (possible) on photo #1 (the swept wings instead of delta)

Borovik, I appreciate your efforts, but remember that all graphics images from Aerofax series, Secret Project, etc. series from Midland Counties are absolute taboo here due to copyright issues.

Hi all,
maybe some of you already know this "Project 478" developed from a German engineering group in Russia just after the end of WW2, but it is interesting how the drawings at the end of the report are so detailed.

Regards,
