Neat, looks like a super-modern T-37. From some angles it looks like a Maverick Jet

I guess for whatever reason this got cancelled in favor of the Tucano order.

Does anyone know the other tenders in this contest ?.

AST.412 was eventually fulfilled by the Embraer (Shorts) Tucano. Other competitors on the final shortlist were the Norman Firecracker. Australian Aircraft Consortium (AAC) A.20 Wamira II and the Pilatus PC.9. Flight lists a full list of contenders here: https://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1983/1983%20-%202009.html?search=AST 412

EdgLEY EAX, not EdGAR EAX. Edgley was the manufacturer of the Optica observation aircraft.

Edgley EAX is new to me.

This is a bit of a guess but I wonder if this design from John Edgley's US patent US4657209 could give a clue. The other illustrations in the patent are of the Optica and a twin-engine design.
