I'm looking for information, drawings and photographs of the WACO 240-A.

Anyone out there have any or no where I should look?

Probably not new to you but ... Aero Files says 240-A had a 240 hp Continental W-670 with only one being produced for Brazil (http://www.aerofiles.com/waco-240a.jpg). That's contradicted on page 154 of the September 1934 Flying Magazine which has small photos of Cantonese WACO 240-A gun installations and mention of a 240 hp Wright engine - a Whirlwind J-6.

A Cantonese 240-A profile was drawn by Miroslav Herold for Chinese Aircraft at War 1926-32 article in Insignia Magazine, Vol. 2, No. 5

Apophenia,

Thanks very much for the link to the side drawing. That is a great start.

I was aware that China received several of these aircraft, having download that article some time ago. But my interest in this aircraft began in earnest when reading documents from USAAC Material Command about one being given to the Air Corps for testing in 1930. It apparently flew nicely but was completely inadequate in its load, etc. Besides, the Air Corps had already accepted the design for the Curtiss A-8 monoplane in 1929 and was getting away from biplane attack aircraft altogether.

I found this image at the website below. It is quite out of focus, and i could not open the website, but maybe you would know how to find it, or how to unblur this image satisfactorily.

Thank you, foiling.

I just happened to get a better copy of that photo and some original 3-views of the 240-A the other day. The article in the link is very interesting, however. And it did take quite some time to open. There may be some usable info there.

Thanks!

Lennart Andersson’s A History of Chinese Aviation: Encyclopedia of Aircraft and Aviation in China
until 1949
, lists six Waco CSO (C-225) Straight Wing (225 hp Wright J-6 Whirlwind) single-seat
light military biplanes fitted with MGs and bomb racks. Two shipped on the SS President Pierce,
and four on the SS President Jackson, they arrived in Hong Kong in January 1931.

He has aircraft numbers for four of the CSO (C-225):
2, 204, 309, 502.

They previously bought five Model ATO (C-220) Taperwing numbered:
201, 202 Tungkung, 203, 204, 210.

They were all Waco 10 variants, and some references say there was only one 240-A
conversion with the Continental W670. The Waco model number labyrinth is one that
has caused major confusion over the years.
 ;)

CSO (C-225) photo from Andersson, and a sharper version from the Waco Club which
they mistakenly identify as the Brazilian 240.

Here are some Waco 10(Hisso & straight wing) and CTO drawings that may be of help.

The CTO (T = Taperwing) is basically the same as the CSO (S = Straight),
C indicates the Wright J-5/R-760, O is for open cockpit.

Combine the two and you have your CSO.

Cheers, Jon
