I think this may have been an earlier version of the Speed Scout patent or a reconnaissance version of the same patent. The Speed Scout S-1 and S-2 were built and flown around 1917. Patents filed in 1916 and awarded in 1919. They do look similar to the patents.S-1 was an unarmed variant of S-2.

This is from patent US1323842, applied for in 1916, which was for a system of low-drag strut bracing without wires. Dynoman is correct that the system was trialled on the S-2
