I've heard that the well respected aviation writter, aged 81, was suffering from pneumonia. Can anybody confirm or deny ? I have seen a source that said he passed away, but I can't trust it. So I'm just asking here.

I am very sorry to hear that. His Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War is one of my favorites of the Putnam aviation series. It was my introduction to Japanese aircraft and really helped dispel a lot of wartime propaganda, myths and half-truths. Repose en paix, M. Francillon.

He wrote the Putnam books on both of my employers - Grumman and Lockheed - as well as the two-volume set on McDonnell Douglas.

He also wrote Vietnam - The War in the Air, which in my opinion is one of two primary reference works on the subject (along with Vietnam Air War Debrief).

He also wrote the two best books on the Air National Guard, one for Aerofax and the other for Airtime.

R.I.P. Rene, you will be missed.
