"Chen’s remarks come after several photos of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s Type 072 III landing ship Haiyangshan were released on Jan. 30, in which the military vessel is reportedly equipped with a railgun at its bow. Railguns use electromagnetic energy to attack targets and are considered an advanced technology that offers greater range and more lethality, while the cost is even cheaper than traditional guns.

According to Chen, though U.S. is currently the most powerful country in electromagnetic weapons research, its declining research fund has provided China a chance to catch up.

The U.S. Navy demonstrated its railgun prototypes in 2006 and announced in 2016 that it would test electromagnetic railguns on the joint high-speed vessel USS Millinocket (JHSV 3), though no railgun has ever been seen on any US military vessels. "

Bravo DoD, bravo. <slow golf clap>

A lark w/ whole LST full of capacitors. {slow golf clap)

Well at least fielding such a weapon sooner wouldn't have made a difference.

After-all, there wasn't a China-U.S.A. war in 2015 where a technical edge would matter... so it is easy to conclude that such a weapon both wasn't needed and its absence wasn't a critical failure in deterrence.

Short of the nuke the same could be said of any weapon. Guess we don't need any of them yet.

If the USA gets in the habit of letting China take the lead in multiple areas, I guess "get used to the back-seat" as they say.
At the least China is getting some good practical experience with having this system on a real warship.

Wow, that's one hell of a big turret. It looks like those crazy nazi guns, Doras. Or maybe the perspective is just wrong.

well yeah, you're not wrong. Compared to what was installed there before.. it's ginormous

I wonder how that big-ass turret is going to affect ship motion in heavy seas?

Assuming it's a test setup I doubt that will be an issue. (They're not likely to be looking to test in poor weather.) And it can't be any worse than this :

All of the complaints about the turret size and placement strike me as sour grape complaints. It is a weapons test and the Chinese picked whatever hull they thought best for the situation. Unless there is a failure, we have no reason to suspect the Chinese naval engineers to be anything other than reasonably competent.

The question is if the gun will work and how well, that's far more meaningful that worrying about it's placement on the ship.

should it become operational, it will open quite of tactical options. From direct attack to a better version of "hypervelocity shell" Should guided shell be included (say it could withstand some 40K G, current conventional gun guided shells are like 10-15K G) and their barrel material good. It can saturate any defenses from quite standoff. 500 Km range need about 2 km/s of velocity assuming Ballistic trajectory.

7 meter, 120mm barrel can provide such range. Assuming Elkonite material.

Anyway if you guys interested. This is an excel spreadsheet i made for above purpose.
