Dr. Amman, the engineer in charge of piston-engine development, thought the 802 was a good engine, and felt that if more power was to be the goal, then they would have done better to have switched over to the 802 rather than to flog the 801, which was now about pushed to the limit. He thought that 3,000 b.h.p. would have been obtained fairly easily from the 802 ; this seemed a reasonable anticipation. The bore and stroke were 6.14m. x 6.85m., giving a capacity of 58 litres. The weight was 3,3801b. A two-stage three-speed blower gave a rated altitude of 32,000ft... and the maximum enging-Speed was 2,700 r.p.m. The cooling fan was geared^jpto 1.85 times crankshaft speed

BMW assigned 20 project codes stemming from the "basic" 802 up to April 1942 alone. This beauty would, if developed, be a wonderful engine.
 
Not to be picky (okay Im being picky) but where do you get your weight figure of 3,380 lb from? Gersdorf, Shubert and the other two give 1,780 kg (3,924 lb) which is heavy compared to comprable engines like Centaurus and R3350. BMW Aero Engines: Milestones in aviation from the beginnings to the present by Jacobs, Kroeschel and Pierer says 1790 kg.

Perhaps, I've very little German but Google Translate makes me think the 1,832 kg figure is for a 'power egg' and the 1,543 kg (3,402 lb) for the bare engine.

Have I got these translations correct?

1. Stomungehaub eisfach (Flow hood in ice) = Cowling
2. Oikuhler = Oil cooler
3. Stralstutsen (jet nozzel) = exhaust
4. Kommandogerat = Throttle control mechanism.
5. Schnellverstellregler (quick adjust) = Some kind of regulator?
 
Mostly right.
1. Strömungshaube einfach (Flow hood simple) = Cowling without accessories
2. Ölkühler = Oil cooler
3. Strahlstützen (radial? supports) = engine mount?
4. Kommandogerät = Throttle control mechanism - a device that controls propellor pitch, supercharger settings, mixture, ignition timing and fuel flow, simplifying engine control by the pilot - also used on BMW 801 equipped Fw 190s
5. Schnellverstellregler (quick adjust) = Some kind of regulator? - yes, probably.
 
3. Strahlstutzen (Stutzen = short pipe): exhaust nozzle ;)
 
Never argue about translations with a native speaker.

Probably, but principally the power of that turbine could be used as well to boost the power output
of the engine, as in a compound engine. A turbocharger would be a "Turbolader", but parlance wasn't
and isn't always exact, not even in technical documents.
 
Bmw-802 head mockup head test cylinder intake In several prototypes of the Type 802 aircraft engine, BMW implemented a principle in aerospace engine construction, which today, in a further developed form as a double VANOS, ensures greater efficiency in all BMW petrol engines. In the 2,500-horsepower engine intake and exhaust valves were controlled by cams, which could be rotated against each other with the engine running.
