LONDON—Russian Helicopters’ Mil Moscow design bureau has been contracted by the Russian defense ministry to work on the concept of a high-speed attack helicopter.

As part of the SBV program, announced Aug. 24 by Russian Helicopters as part of the ministry’s national Army 2017 events, Mil will spend two years refining designs for a high-speed attack helicopter. This will build on the company’s recent experience flying a highly-modified Mi-24 “Hind” attack helicopter, designated Mi-24LL PSV. It was originally developed to experiment with technologies for the company’s high-speed Russian Advanced Commercial Helicopter (Rachel).

Mi-24LL flight trials conducted in 2016 saw the aircraft attain speeds of around 219 kt. (405 km/hr.). This was slightly faster than the 216 kt. achieved by a modified Westland Lynx in 1986, which still holds the official world speed record for a conventional helicopter.

The Mi-24LL was fitted with more powerful Klimov VK-2500 engines and new-design composite rotor blades with curved tips. The aircraft has been fitted with several different wing configurations, but it is unclear which configuration it was using when it completed the high-speed flight.

At the time of the flights, senior Russian government officials were openly talking about the procurement of a fleet of high-speed attack helicopters capable of cruising at 350-360 km/hr. that could perhaps enter production during the next round of state arms purchases, set for 2018-2025.

Russian Helicopters “has developed a series of scientific and technical reserve [knowledge] for a promising high-speed helicopter,” said Andrey Boginsky, Russian Helicopters’ director general. “With the indicators and experience gained during the tests, both the Ministry of Defense and our holding believe the parameters received during the tests and the experience gained to be enough to move on to the next stage.”

It is not clear if this will lead to a new-design attack helicopter or modified derivatives of the attack helicopters already operational in the Russian inventory. The Russian Army Air Force already has three types of attack helicopters operational, including the Kamov Ka-52, Mil Mi-28 and Mi-24/35. Ka-52s also have been adapted for naval use.

Meanwhile, the general designer of Klimov, Alexey Grigoriev, described the development of a new generation of helicopter engines making greater use of additive manufacturing processes. Grigoriev also said consideration is being given to replacing the main gearbox with an electric drive similar to that tested last year on a modified Robinson R44 in the U.S. But it is not clear if Grigoriev is talking about a hybrid system using a turbine to provide electrical power for an electric motor or eliminating the engines altogether.

“The power plant no longer includes an engine and a main reducer, but a DC motor that rotates the screw directly,” he said through a translator. “We are striving to make not just an evolutionary, but a revolutionary step in the development of power plants for helicopters.”

Russia has become more reliant on the Klimov bureau for helicopter turboshafts after being cut off from Ukrainian supplier Motor Sich because of Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and its support for the insurrection in Eastern Ukraine.

It was not Mil Design Bureau, but Russian Helicopters contracted by MoD. It was always thought that SBV (aka PBV, ex-UVK) design choice (Kamov coaxial or Mil SLES main rotor) is still to be terermined during two-year concept definition studies, with Kamov being favored by MoD.
Interestiing though that RH press-release template have RH and Mil background and missing Kamov...

How should we rename the topic? "Russian Helicopters SBV"?

Russian Helicopters press release:

Russian Helicopters and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract on formation of the concept of a high-speed combat helicopter
24.08.2017 / Moscow

The "Russian Helicopters" holding (part of Rostec State Corporation) and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a contract on formation of the concept of a high-speed combat helicopter within the framework of the International military-technical forum "Army-2017".

The contract between Russian Helicopters and the Ministry of Defense involves works on determining the technical appearance of the perspective high-speed combat helicopter. The construction bureaus included into holding are now developing this sphere. In these works, the reserve that has been created during the previous research works is used, including the results of flight tests of the flying laboratory of a perspective high-speed helicopter with a new main rotor.

"As of now, the holding has a significant scientific and technical reserve in the sphere of the perspective high-speed helicopter project - not only through the holding's own funds but also due to the state sources of financing. Both the Ministry of Defense and our holding believe the parameters received during the tests and the experience gained to be enough to move on to the next stage - the development of a high-speed combat helicopter. The contract signed today is a serious step towards the new generation of helicopter construction, with higher speeds and flight and technical characteristics," noted Andrey Boginsky, CEO of the "Russian helicopters" holding, on the results of the signing.

The contract is agreed for two years, and as a result of its implementation, the appearance of the combat helicopter should be determined and the technical task for the experimental construction works formed.

If you are using an advancing blade rigid rotor why have a compound wing and vice versa. Once you are talking speeds above 250kts, only tiltrotors have been proven and compound helicopters of any type may need to stow their rotors.

Kamov Design Bureau never disappoints. I guess with enough thrust coming out of the back of that thing with slowed rotors...

So this is the high speed attack helicopter that Bondarev mentioned publically at MAKS then?

Rotor looks driven through take-off drives from the turbofans.

The DARPA Heliplane was supposed to cruise at 640 km with a rotor so the idea isn't completely crazy. It used tip jets rather than a transmission for turning the rotor and had a pivoting mast to reduce rotor drag in cruise.

I wonder if you mashed this up with the LightningStrike and assuming you could harvest electricity from the jet turbines, you might have a decent concept.

The long pole in the tent for this concept is the propulsion. Back in the day, GE did some work on 'convertible' engines, namely on a TF-34.
There's quite a few reports on the NTRS. It's not easy to do, and would need quite a bit of effort.

Kamov has lost to Mil' Blackhawski 400+ km/h less radical contender.

Is that the same Mil design, with the pusher prop at the end of the tail boom? The one shown for several years at the Russian Helicopter Show?

No. Looks like S-67 on steroids (and yes, it has giant wing). No propulsor AFAIK.

I think this is a SBV helicopter from Mil

This does seem a logical progression from Mi-24/35

it seems combination of Mil's and Eurocopter's technology

(edge of blade)

It seems not. Mil blade edge looks like BERP development, while it still has some distinctive differences.
Has nothing in common with Airbus BlueEdge shape.

There seems to be a good sized lift offset as well on the rotor system.
