Hi Hesham

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm aware of these designations but I'm hesitant to add them to my list because of uncertainty about their Pacific War origins. Does anyone have Pacific War-era Japanese documentation of these projects?

Of course, given Blackkite's amazing research and subsequent revelations concerning Project Z/Fugaku, I suppose anything is possible.

The IJN/IJA late-war projects were certainly visionary... Best, Harry

New addition:

• Nakajima N-10 (3K) 14-Shi Carrier Attack Plane [B6N Tenzan]

Harry

Another new addition:

• Mitsubishi M-80 19-Shi All-wood Land-based Attack Plane [Tozan] (cancelled)

From Ishiguro, Ryusuke and Januszewski, Tadeusz, Japanese Anti-submarine Aircraft in the Pacific War. ISBN 978-83-65281-39-5, pages 124 - 133

Hi Folks

In “Japanese Anti-submarine Aircraft in the Pacific War”, by Ishiguro and Januszewski, there is reference to the “Jitsu Kei Bango numbering system of development programs for experimental aircraft…” Unfortunately, the authors did not include a Kanji rendition of this phrase, which makes further research by “monolingual” folks like me really difficult.

I’ve been researching the Service Airplane Development Program (SADP) designations for some time, but have never before seen this phrase. Perhaps there is still some new information on this topic to be found in Japan, since the authors subsequently revealed the previously-unmentioned Mitsubishi M-80?

FYI:

Reply by Email very kindly provided by Ryusuke Ishiguro:

"Jitsu Kei Bango is short from Jitsuyo-ki Shisei Keikaku Bango (実用機試製計画番号)
or Shisei-ki ryaku bango (試製機略番号) - short numerical system about program of prototypes, as: M-70, N-60 or another."

Phrase literally translates as "Practical Machine Trial Manufacture Plan number". I believe this system was conceived as an attempt to ensure that proposed designs were relevant to future requirements. First time I've seen this terminology.

Best Regards,

Harry
