From the old "if we can't find a model of it...... make one" school of fun. This is our next model to show work in progress. Wingspan is 24 inches and made of Jelutong wood as are most pattern models. Should be into primer this next weekend and paint not too soon after. I'll post more work as we progress. Found a great paint shop in my back yard that has lacquer formulas going back to the 1920's. My new go to resource for sure. Ordering a silver that should look the part from the 1950's. For you non-Cali folks.. it is REALLY hard to get the good paint here in CA anymore and this was a great accidental find. He will match any color we need in smaller quantities. Really excited to get this one done. Enjoy......

Re: NORTHROP DESIGN PD 1053 N-31A

It seems like Northrop's long range interceptor design.

But it is the first time that I see the wingless design of this.

Hi Litzj,

it was mentioned in the book, The Incredible Attack Aircraft Of The USS United States.

For Allysonca,

great work and well done, but about N-31A,I only know it as this.

Re: NORTHROP DESIGN PD 1053 corrected to a N-59A

From an old J Zichek drawing back in 2007..... and I've seen some illustrations of a 3D rendering calling it an N-31 but when checking with Tony Chong it actually is a N-59A to compete with the Douglas A3D Skywarrior. I'll correct it. Tony says there were about 30 iterations of this one design.

I just found my old post and thought I would add the finished picture. I was originally going to doing this silver but in looking at the competitor Douglas A3D from the period I decided to do it in the dark sea blue, which I loath. Enjoy.

Beautiful work Allysonca and very much appreciated! And Citrus90 too, true craftsmen..

Great subject! Yes, Jelutong is wonderful wood to carve. Sanding, though, is best done outdoors! The dust is irritating.

Thought I would post the 3 view we worked from.
