This is the front landing gear door of the Do-31. Was the illustration of the road runner always there? If so, does anybody know why?

this illustration is on Dornier Do 31 E3, D-9531 at Flugwerft Oberschleißheim near Munich.

on the Cockpit is on right side the lettering "WOOD" with two OO as cartoon eyes
00r32a03

that's stands for Drury W. Wood a US Testpilot, so the road runner and Cartoon eyes on D-9531 make sense now

I have question about Do-31E
was that the final version of the Aircraft ?
or had the production version look more like this:

index.php

or this: Do 131 ? (if Do 131 is production version of Do 31)
index.php

Could it be there were several Do 131 variants? The one that was pictured earlier in this topic appears in a NASA document as the "Do 131A", not just plain Do 131...

Judging shape and position of the lift-engine pods, the T-tail and the shape
of the nose and of the nacelles of the model in the background, it COULD be
something like a Do 131, but a clearer phot, or, as Michel already pointed out,
the source for the photo could tell us more .. ;)

Could be either the production version of the 131 or a joint DH129 derivative with the UK?

Dornier went on to develop the 231 in the 70s but this has a longer nose.

My dear Jemiba,

I will remember the source, but I am sure,it was from a forum site.

Seen as part of a display, just behind the Do.31E, at Oberschleißheim was this model of the Dornier Do.231 VTOL / transporter projected for late 1970s.

Model of MBB HFB-600 Vertibus on display at Hanover Air Show 1970.

MBB HFB-600 Vertibus would use four wing-mounted GE 1/10JI turbojets as gas generators for lift/cruise fans beneath them. Four other Ge 1/10JI in fuselage are for lift.

This model looks like a intermediate design between the Dornier Do31E and Do31B (?). A similar drawing described as the Do31 Stage 3V has its horizontal stabilizer placed lower on the tail. https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,271.msg29491.html#msg29491

Hahaha, i saw the first bounce and i thought "wow, that's a pretty high sink rate, they must really have a strong landing gear!"
cool video, thanks for posting.

In Reply #46 (April 2012), hesham asked about a VTOL model. That image is attached here along with what is purported to be another angle showing the nose. These images were screen-grabs from the Polish TV science programme, Sonda (Ep. 196 Pteron). Source: http://impdb.org/index.php?title=Sonda

Although presented as two angles on the same test model, I'm not convinced.

The nose shot shows single orifices for propulsion engines with pods outboard for banks of lift-jets. A cruciform tail is also visible. The nose glazings have only a remote resemblance to those of the Do 31 ... but the basic shape is there for the Dornier. In contrast, the image that hesham posted show a single lift jet roughly half-way along each nacelle. So, not that much in the way of lifting power (STOL rather than VTOL?).

For hesham's shot, my first thought was an early take on the conventional-jet version of the Do 131B. The T-tail is right. The problem is the degree of sweep on the model's wings.

The Fw 260/300 and DH.129/DoHS-1 were alluded to. Again, I would point to the absence of outboard lift-jet pods. Still, the nacelles look about right and this model does seem to be a T-tail with all swept surfaces. So, perhaps, a more limited STOL variant of one of those designs?
