Hi,

Anther project from 1950s,submitted by Richard Whitcomb

but had a longer nose, normal tailplane not delta and a curved
fusealge in at the root of the wings,it had a Coke Bottle fuselage,
it was offer to help the designers of jet aircraft.

look on page 22 of the PDF, and you'll find an image of a 'switchblade' configuration, along with a brief discussion of why it wasn't adopted for this concept.

cheers,
Robin.

I did a fake aircraft some time ago at the request of a "What if" forum member, and it is just shocking how similar it is to this! I don't usually post my creations here, but in this case, you'll have to admit that it's almost like I reconstructed this unbuilt project! (of course, this consists of the wings of the Convair XF-92 fitted to the fuselage of the XF-91 Thunderceptor...).

In fact they are not THAT strange. They are similar to those of the Rockwell/MBB X-31. This model looks a bit like an X-31 Vector in the proposed tailless configuration with the intakes on top instead of under. Front end is reminiscent of the F-18...
