Many many thanks. These images are right in my ballpark for the period and craziness.

They would all make great models

This thread seems like the best place for this:

A New Tank Armament System, Watervliet Arsenal, March 1959
http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/501680.pdf

The report describes the origin of the 152mm gun/launcher, and the tanks that carried it. Interestingly, it seems that the original logic wasn't the Shillelagh missile - rather, it was to design a lightweight gun optimised for HEAT projectiles, rather than a high-velocity, high-pressure gun for KE rounds. This resulted in a 140mm gun, subsequently enlarged to 152mm calibre to accommodate guided missiles and a more effective HE shell.

A demonstration fit of the 152mm gun in the turret of a T95 tank is proposed, not that of the eventual M60A2 but with some similarities, as is an MBT optimised for the 152mm gun and an airborne assault vehicle, both very obvious precursors to the MBT-70 and M551. All three tanks had bustle ammunition storage with blow-out panels, quite innovative for the time, and the AAV also has a gas turbine engine.

yes a great find
should be considered in contemporary tank armament conversations.

Hi all! I vaguely recall there being an image of MBT-70 "Block 2" with an alternate turret (and/or new engine?) still armed with a 152mm main gun. Does anybody have any information/details/images regarding this? Been trying to find it but it's been driving me mad o_O

Cheers, and have a nice day :)

Re: MBT 70 anti-aircraft version

Once you get into the Engineer CE, Bridge AVLB and Recovery ARV versions the driving position would no longer be in such turret, they would adopt more conventional approaches which would be cheaper than modifying a MBT turret.

The tri-axial stabalisation turret looks very interesting, a photo in Rolf Hilmes 'Main Battle Tanks' developments in design since 1945 shows an experimental turret on a leopard 1 chasis (albeit modified) page 49.

Just to round off an unofficial - what-if drawing of a MBT-70 chasis with a Matador SPAAG turret.
Nice work JAZZ!
Although I must say I've always had the thought that an MBT chassis seems a lot of tank = $$$$ for 30mm SPAAG IMO

IIRC the idea was that the AA could advance with the tanks as it had the same level of protection.

Does anyone have anything on the planned USMC procurement of the MBT-70?

Grey Havoc
I remember reading somewhere in a 60s US military mag that the USMC were following the progress of the MBT70 programme.
They waited till the M1 had proved itself before ordering, so might well have done the same with the MBT70

Bought a cheap paperback copy of the Hunnicutt book on Abrams which covers MBT70
Here, hopefully not braking copyright, are the three MBT70 variants as small snaps
RV XM742 recovery tank
AVLB XM743/4 bridge tank
CEV XM745 engineer tank

It's too thin for that. Maybe it's crane, very long and thin crane... pic is blurred and it do look like hook is hanging from it in upper position.

What a peculiar concept.

A bit. I think the lower half of the scoop is what they call a "thumb" -- basically a clamp to allow the excavator scoop to also be used to lift and grab obstacles or debris.

I also suspect that the design of that excavator arm would have had to change to get to production. You need a bend in there somewhere for leverage if you want to lift anything weighty.

The caption below the illustration does say "the long reach of the back hoe bucket and gripper is evident" if I read the somewhat blurry image correctly.

From Hunnicutt's "Abrams" :....20,000 pound capacity boom assembly. The latter could be extended from 144 inches to approximately 360 inches and it was fitted with a back hoe and gripper as well as a lifting hook"

There was a proposal to mount the same turret on an M60A1 chassis, as well.

I think part of it was in order to be able to carry out both demolition and EOD work.

Hello dear tank friends! I have something to show again! This is the first draft of the Kampfpanzer 70! Unfortunately a few parts are missing, but I improvised a little to show what the vehicle actually looks like! Does anyone have any pictures ???

These German wooden models are amazing and one exists out there for the proposed AA turret version of Kpz70.
This is a very early version of Kpz70 and has a dozer blade fitted.
Apart from the Hunnicutt Abrams book which has lengthy accounts of the US side of the MBT70, German language sources are a few pages in various expensive books on the Leopard.

Since the weather was so nice today and I found a replacement pipe, I decided to take better pictures!

Thanks for the photos! but suppose this is not MBT70, it is pre-MBT 70 project by Porshe - KpZ 07P

The Porsche is similar to my model! What I urgently need is a photo or a drawing that is missing in the rear area of the tower yes what? I wonder was the capsule for the driver or the 20mm on-board cannon there :/

My model is not from Porsche!

The question that is still open is this hole

The question that is still open is this hole
I'd suggest for the 20mm AA gun, rather than the driver. As there appears to be no hull driving position, I think he would need to be located under one of the turret cupolas.

How hard would it have been to fit Chobam onto the MBT70

All details suggest that it is 1963-64 Porshe model, it had 2 variants -
How did you manage to find these incredibly rare models?
What is the Russian book you have the photos from? I have never seen them in any German book.
I think the hole would have been the 20mm cannon.

Hello UK 75, the models find me or I get a phone call asking you do you want this and that ?! Unfortunately, I don't have the right contact with people! Like the last two models, I always don't know what's coming to me in the package, it's very exciting! But luckily there are forums like this one with competent people who always have something in their archive! There are more models to follow and I really don't know what to expect! But believe me, you are always happy to get something that only exists once in the world and that no one except engineers have seen! Only my girlfriend is slowly getting angry because these things are very big and I slowly don't know what to do with them :D
- Greetings Johannes
