is that a booster under that shuttle??
After that extra trolley launch speed , do you still need a booster???

Check the linked article and its continuation here:

Yes, it's a two-stage vehicle (2.5 counting the trolley?) with both flying stages being reusable horizontal landing vehicles. The trolley gets the combined vehicle to flying speed (guessing 200 knots or so) but there's still a long way to go from there to space so the booster gets it part of the way and it stages so the smaller vehicle can make orbit.

I've always wondered about the Lockheed Star Clipper. Seems as if it was grossly optimistic, or then payload would have been very small. It would have had to lug all the takeoff engines to orbit. Think Space Shuttle without the boosters and many times the engines. An SSME weighs about 3.5 t and you would have to enlarge the tank... I'm having trouble seeing how it could work without shedding engines on the way.

What was this ?.

very interesting, they study low speed aerodynamics during landing
note on first picture the model has canard wings near cockpit.

Interesting image among those recently posted by the San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) on their Flickr photostream. It appears to be a re-purposing of their VSX (S-3) proposal mock-up as a nominal "Space Shuttle" cockpit.

San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) has also recently posted additional photos of the Convair/General Dynamics B9U fly-back booster cockpit mock-up that was examined by the likes of Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell, Hank Hartsfield, Thomas Stafford, Gordon Fullerton, and others. Spare for Fullerton and Hartsfield (who recently passed), it would be interesting to learn from any of the others what their thoughts were about the B9U concept.

Here's a link to the B9U mock-up photos and illustrations posted within the SDASM's collection at Flickr:

Seller states this is a hypersonic passenger jet but it looks more like an early shuttle design to me.
