Found this photo of a model of the Piaggio P.155 ASW amphibious aircraft
in FLIEGER 1955. I think, it was one of the 25 contenders to the NATO ASW
aircraft, which eventually saw the Breguet Atlantic as the winner.

My dear Jemiba,

Good found, but can you translate anther info. about Piaggio
P.153 project,please.

"can you translate anther info. about Piaggio "

Of course:

"The Piaggio P-153 is a project for a ground attack a/c (with two AS-Mamba engines)"

Thank you my dear Jemiba,

And now we know a little proposals for this competition, such as
Bristol-206 & 207,Avro-745,Breguet-1150,Piaggio P.155,Dornier
P.340 and Nord (may be N-2510).

AFAIK, the Nord contender, mentioned by Cuny only as ASM, was
a Breguet Atlantic lookalike. The Noratlas derivatives were just
intended as ASW trainers and were already outdated at the time
of this program.

Canadair CL-67 in two different versions. One with four AS Mamba 10s, and another with four RR Tyne 1s (4310 shp).

Dimensions for the Tyne-powered version were: span 37.18m, area 125.4 m2, height 9.75m.

Hi,

does anyone know the Belgium and Netherland contenders to this
competition ?.

From an Piaggio advertisement in Intervia 1958, a profile
of the P.155 :

Re: Breguet Atlantic contenders (Piaggio P.155)

"Hi Everyone.
Found the attached photo at the Heathrow Air Fair last Sunday. It shows a model of the Piaggio P.155 flying boat project on display at an industry show somewhere. My knowledge of Italian flying boats is zero, so I wondered if anyone had any information please. I don't even know if this design was ever built or flown because I cannot find any references to it anywhere. I am assuming 1950s but the photo has no information on the back.

Thanks to all of you for your support again this year. Very Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Tony Buttler"

Looks like Tony forgot to search Secret Projects forum ;D ;D ;D

Heaps of references from periodicals of the time. Seems that Piaggio approached Saunders-Roe to test P.155 in their tanks.

In fact, there were some different iteration of the Piaggio P.155 project, answering different requirements. The basic project was inspired by last Martin seaplanes and differed mainly for the power plant. There was a twin radial version offered to Aeronautica Militare as a replacement for Piaggio P.136 and CRDA Cant.Z.506S for sea Search And Rescue rôle; this version was built in wooden mock-up form. One of the turboprop configurations was a contestant in the Atlantic program and If I remember right, there was also a version for amphibious special missions.
About the P.153 (project only) I was able to find only a three-view drawing with two sections. The aircraft appear to be be a modern single-turboprop executive (perhaps with an Armstrong-Siddeley Double Mamba), similar to the today Pilatis PC-XII.

From InterAvia, July 1957 the Piaggio P.155 SAM-1 SAR variant, ASW variant AS with PTL-engines
and the P.155X for 20 to 30 passengers and PTL engines, too. The side view of the P.155 SAM.1
comes from InterAvia, May 1957

Hi All!

Great Britains Atlantics contenders:

Bristol 206
Fairey
Avro 745

Hi,

the Avro-745 from Avro Heritage site,by the way it was refused by NATO
because it is too big in its size.

I found another picture, slightly different, of the wooden mock-up of the piston-engined Piaggio P.155

The Atlantic was a result of a NATO competition NMBR3.
It was meant to be a project for the Belgian, Dutch, French, German, Italian and UK armed forces (the US was a financier partner). Production was to be split among those partners.

Hi,

now we can say,the contenders for NBMR.2 were;

- Bristol Type-206 & Type-207
- Avro-745
- Breguet Br.1150
- Piaggio P.155
- Dornier P.340
- Nord design
- Lockheed CL-495
- Canadair CL-67
- Blackburn ?
- English Electric ?
- Handley Page ?
- Saro P.208
- Shorts ?
- Vickers ?
- SABCA ?
- Avions Fairey ?
- Airco (De Havilland UK) ?
- Avro Canada ?
- DH Canada ?
- Dassault ?
- Sud Aviation ?
- Aviolanda ?
- Fokker ?

Who can add or solve the mysteries ?.

Hi Chris,

of course it was from two sources,Aeroplane Monthly, but I don't remember the issue
number, and from Flying Review 2/1959,but it's not the problem, the problem is how
to get all those mysteries or gaps,I suggest that;

Blackburn SP-?
Handley Page HP.121 (only my guess)
Shorts PD.?
Vickers Type-8xx
SABCA S-xx
Dassault MD-?
Sud Aviation X-2xx
DHC P.?
Fokker P.2xx

Who can explain if my dear Boxkite meant by that, Fairey Aviation Company Limited
or Avions Fairey ?.

It was Fairey Aviation.

From Ali Nuove 6/1959,

here is a Piaggio P.155 tender.

e fokker one is actually the fokker f.27-200MAR the maritime patrol version of the f.27 it was used by many airforces like thailand netherlands ect... 1651235663964.png

The F.27 was not mentioned in any NBMR.2 documents I've seen, otherwise I'd have mentioned it in Nimrod's Genesis. Fokker, however, was mentioned as they were building the Atlantic wing centre section.
