Merckle Helicopter Prototypes and Projects

While scanning old issues of RAF Flying Review, I came across this 1960 profile of a German helicopter I never heard about, the Merckle SM 67. Was this actually built, and if so, how many prototypes existed? I'd love to hear more about this project. Thanks!

Germany Merckle E98D: experimental high-speed helicopter,projected in collaboration
with Bolkow in 1960s.
 
Also from the book; Flugzeugtypen - Typenbuch der internationalen Luftfahrt

has anyone a more info or drawings to the Merckle M.68 and M.69 helicopter projects ?.

can any one translate those Germany articles about those two helicopters,unfortunately
I didn't study Germany language.

Of course, but they don't contain very much information, I'm afraid.

" Merckle M 68:
This type is under development now. It will be powered by a German turbine engine with 650 PSe
(shaft hp) and be used for special purposes. Technical data weren’t released still yet. Flight test is
expected to start during summer 1961

Merckle M 69:
This twin-seat helicopter is under development, too. A prototype already under construction. It’s a
very simple construction and is mainly intended to be used for pilots training and sports flying. No
further details were released still yet."


I'm not qute sure, what is meant with "special purposes", I would rather think of something like
light crane/ logging, or civil surveyance, than a military use.

 
Well known? By whom? German helicopter specialists maybe... But certainly not 98% of the forum's members I'm sure.

I often wonder what criteria you use when you declare a design "well known", hesham... and you often do. I have told you already in the past that it comes off as extremely pretentious... "Not very well known", "fairly well known", "rarely seen" could be a good way to moderate things a bit!

there was a site about VTOL built and unbuilt aircraft and projects,that site remained
about more than 10 years on Internet before it was broken,it had many Germany VTOL
aircraft and projects,and I think anyone used searching on Internet knew it,and here is
a view from it to Merckle E-130 and M-133 projects from it.


By the way,the site was called; www.vtol.org ,and it is still there,but they deleted
the built and unbuilt VTOL aircraft section.

... and although published the AHS, which actually is a trustworthy organisation with regards
to rotor/VTOL aircraft, the companies speling in the title of this thread is correct and not on that
picture. It's really "Merckle" and NOT "Merckel". ;)
 
Nice to read about other Merckle projects like S.M.65/66/69/70 and M.72/73/75/88.

Also new for me...

Walter Schlieske, former fighter pilot and engineer for the RLM, had started to build a “Flugroller”
(flying scooter),short “Fluro” in 1952. It should have a five bladed rotor, powered by a VW engine,
should be able to take off with a crew of two,reach a speed of 150 km/h and cost around 4 to 5,000,-
DM, a real “olkshubschrauber” (peoples helicopter). That project actually triggered Karl Merckles
interest in this kind of aircraft and made him start his own company. Mr. Schlieske founded the
“FLUR-Flugroller and Hubschrauber Entwicklung” (FLUR flying scooter and helicopter development )
in Minden/Germany and built the Libelle, powered by a 100 ccm two-stroke engine and tip ramjets.
The small helicopter should cost 8,000,- DM for the single seat and 14,000,- for the twin seat variant,
Both built from aluminium tubing and bamboo ! But the claimed flight proved to have been faked,
the company was just bogus and Schlieske went to jail in 1957.
So, not really what we call a “project”, I’m afraid !

"During 1957 the Süddeutschen Flugzeugwerke (Southern German Aircraft Company)
got a order from the ministry for defence to develop a 5-seat turbine powered
helicopter . This probably was the first order for development of an air vehicle since
1945. The project got the designation "SM-67". The company was busy before with
two othzer projects, the "SM-65" and "SM-66", both smaller helicopters, but those
projetcs were not proceeded with."
 
Pics from the Seitz article in full size quality (all pictures depict the SM 67 except for the last one which shows the rotor hub meant for the E 130).
