Hi Stéphane,
I donot know if any photo exists of the Q3W1, but I have this sketch in my files. At least I think it is supposed to represent the Q3W1. Source is a USA magazine but I lost it during the many moves.

Thanks a lot Walter. For those who don't have Word, here's the text and the picture you provided, plus one I found elsewhere:

2-seat ASW/maritime patrol
one 480-515hp Hitachi GK2B radial engine
max. speed 138 m,ph, icr 475ft/minute, ceiling 17,000ft, range 935 miles
wingspan 49.146ft; length 33.596ft; height 12.904ft
armament: one 7.7mm mchine gun

DETAILS: The Q3W1 Nankai (a Japanese Imperial Navy designation) was derived from the K11W2 Shiragiku trainer as a specialised anti-submarine and maritime patrol aircraft and carried sonar equipment. The all wood construction type was developed by the Kyūshū Hikōki KK and retained the general K11W1 structure, but the Q3W1 differed in having a retractable u/c, redesigned vertical tail surfaces with square tip, a smaller cockpit canopy for single pilot operation and a redesigned lower forward fuselage, with accommodation for a navigator/observer. Only a prototype was completed with one 480-515hp Hitachi GK2B engine. The aircraft was lost on its maiden flight in January 1945 (5 January?) when it was forced to make a wheels-up landing on the maiden flight. Further development was then stopped.

Production: 1

Is there any real photos of this aircraft? It would be something special to have :)

Still no photo, but a nice profile of the Nankai, found in Deviant Art.

Costas,

Looks like they messed up the lower forward fuselage. It's supposed to be clear for the navigator/observer.

There is probably no photo because wikipedia says Nankai is a project only (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABsh%C5%AB_K11W)

I noticed, but overall it's a good effort.

That page should be updated because as you can see in the above posts, there was one made and crashed on its initial test flight.

I also did a quick edit to fix where the glass should be.

I sent a message yesterday to the artist who did the profile, telling him about this thread, how much we appreciated his work (which he means for a book) and how it could be improved by adding the two glazed panels.

I hope I didn't come off as sounding too critical because I very much admire people who can do these kinds drawings, it's beyond my ability! I'm glad that the creator can be notified to correct it. That fact that this subject is going to be covered in a future book is great. I hope when it's ready we are notified about it so I can buy it.

I can't find Kyushu Q3W Nankai(南海, southern sea) drawings or mock-up pictures in Japanese sources.

Not to worry... Here is what I wrote to him yesterday:

The Nankai, and especially your artwork, are currently discussed on our forum: [link]

The quality of your profile is commendable, but it would seem you misinterpreted the glazed panels below the nose as being covered like the rest!

Anyway, keep up the great work!

And here is what he replied earlier today:

Oh my... seems I did. I will have to fix that. Thank you so much though for the comments and for the link. I am deeply flattered now.

That's unfortunate. I figured there would be some visual source for this aircraft.

From Japanese wikipedia, as you already knew.

The Imperial Japanese Navy planned development of the antisubmarine patrol aircraft based on the "Shiragiku" paying attention to the flexibility of the "Shiragiku".
The planned antisubmarine patrol aircraft was named "Nankai (Q3W1)."
"Nankai" had enlarged body of the "Shiragiku" and had all wooden structure with retractable landing gear.
However, "Nankai" finished only plan stage when the end of the war.

操縦士 : pilot. 偵察員 : shopper, 電信員 : radio operator
Tokai had a rader and a MAD.
What is Q2(W?)?

blackkite, I know you mean well... but once again you are filling a topic with images of OTHER aircraft. You do this all the time!

Could you please stick to the Nankai here, and perhaps also the Shiragiku if it's appropriate... and leave the Tokai in its own topic? You can always put a link to it afterwards, but at least it prevents the dissemination of resources all over the place!

Thanks a lot for your understanding.

More about KirovRampager (a.k.a. Gralin Stewart) who did the profile artwork: she is an ex-RAAF reservist who says she has "turned (her) interests to civilian aircraft and drawing".

To my question: "Did you find any original Japanese line art or plans for the Q3W1? It seems to be very difficult to find any image of it!" here is what she answered:

The plans I used were incredibly tiny, like a 260 by 300 sized image; I had a hard time using it to make this.

This confirms, if need be, how difficult it is to find any correct image of the Q3W!

What is Q2(W?)?"

I believe Q2 is the Mitsubishi Q2M "Taiyō" derived from the Ki-67 Hiryu. So it's Q1W1, Q2M(1), and Q3W(1). but only the Q1W1 saw production and service.

Many thanks! Sorry for my low level question.

Dear Sirs,

As for Nankai Q3W, as far as I know, there is no photo and original drawing discovered yet.
Only image drawing or sketch are.
Anyway, I and my coauthor will release the book including Q3W, Q2M and Q1W, hopefully around June 15 this year
from Mushroom Model Publications. I hope you enjoy the book.

Regards,
Ryusuke

Good news ! Let June comes...
Thanks.

L.

I am looking forward to it also. I hope someone produces a 1/48 scale model kit of the Q1W1 Lorna as well.

I'm with you there. I assume this reference: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/100549-az-model-az4842-kyushu-q1w1-lorna is incorrect.

GTX, apparently it is incorrect. AZ website does not mention it. A Google search only lists the Scalemates web site. My guess is the company pre-announced it and Scalemates made an entry for the kit but it never happened. The only kit I'm aware of is the Fine Molds 1/72 kit.

There is also Czech Pavla models 1/72 Lorna.
