Hi,

and here is a comparison between Chinook 234UT and 234LR drawings.

Hi,

I don't know if this concept was developed from Chinook or just a hypothetical
design ?.

Boeing HLH is mentioned, but the text says it's on the picture 2.55 and this is 2.57.

Thank you my dear Bigvlada,

and maybe it was unknown version ?.

Hmm, seems to me that once you start throwing on extra engines and turning the CH-47 into a compound helicopter that maybe you should just start with a clean sheet large tilt-rotor or something else where less compromises would be necessary.

The CH-47 was already tested with a set of wing mounted in the center fuselage and experiments showed that there was no advantages in term of efficiency (with in fact a significant loss during hover and slow speed flight). thanks to the tandem rotors having overlapping discs. See Boeing BV-347

That might change with additional propulsion propellers. Unloading the rotors and use most (all?) of power on the propellers would give the additional wings a different perspective. Make them foldable/turnable in hover would solve that issue too.

Like most things as they get older, weight. Chinook has been weight challenged for a long time already. Last two mods (I may be wrong here) have done little more than regain the lift weight it Chinook is suppose to have by specification.

Recently had a MH-47G drop in for fuel at our local airport. Just look at all the add ons that add to the weight challenge.....

Enjoy the Day! Mark

Anyone else having trouble with the picture? Yasotay, can you re-upload please?
[edit: thanks for reupload!]

Here are a few more to make a run for the title:

Flatter Fuel tanks reduce the DeltaP loss due High pressure air impacting the airframe body under the disk rotor. That allows for an extra power available for lift, hence ctrl trim ext...
On average up to 8 to 10% of power is lost under the disc.

Move of frwd landing gear give us a hint of the structural changes (from Al to CRFP).

Agreed… the RDF due to the Alpha-R of the compared rotor diameter hyperbolic cosine helps a lot. With full trim , of course.

Btw, Are you sure the tanks are flatter ?

Oh God Galgot, forget about me... The Chinook team results made a very good engineering book... worth a read.

:p I just love when you call me "God Galgot".
Where can i get that book please ? (Serious question).

They told us unibrow types, "more fuel good. Like G model, good, good, you buy"

Slightly digressing, newly formed joint venture Coulson-Unical brought their first CU-47 Helitanker (formerly army CH-47D) to Heli Expo back in Feb in Atlanta. Several more being converted as we speak so aiming for five by 2020 summer. My photos below from both static and departing the show.

Cheers

Fine looking Chinook - they have done much the same to their C-130 fire tankers.

Thanks! Mark

From L+K 2/1968.

This is a Sea Knight (Boeing-Vertol 107) not a Chinook (Boeing-Vertol 114).

Edit: However, I did find a mention that this aircraft was modified with stub wings, etc in support of the Model 347 program, before being modified back and sold to the Swedes as a Bv.107II-15.

We may be looking at a 'French' Chinook, though it remains to be seen if it will survive the inevitable domestic backlash, not to mention the mandarins in Brussels:

The US Army seems to be looking at engine options for the CH-47F, partly it seems due to concerns about T-55 production schedules and the age of the basic design.
Honeywell are looking at another T-55 upgrade while the GE T408 is also in the frame.

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/a...s-ch-47f-engine-alternative-after-t55-461546/
The Army should be looking for engine options all right, for a new d..m helicopter. The Gov should find some means to keep employees studying etc and develop /produce a bigger more capable craft. Jeepers stop playing w that little thing.

I suspect that the last illustration may have been a proposed layout for the CH-47 when in the design stage. The engines being in a higher position seem to lend weight to that idea.

RAF Chinooks have been supporting French counter insurgency troops in Mali against Islamic militants, typical French charged RAF for the fuel used.

And not even traded for Champagne?

A Chinook buy was inevitable. Long time story.

That it hasn't been done before the tragic recent crash in Mali speaks a lot about the noise and jamming surrounding traditional French procurement process.

I wouldn't be surprised if Germany also hops on the French interest for the Chinook, so that both forces will have a joint fleet just like with the joint Franco-German C-130J Super Hercules squadron based at Evreux, France. But I really want to know, how well the CH-47 performs with the GE T408 engines of the CH-53K.
