Just got this from Amazon and it is a huge book.

It has everything you could ever want to know about these aircraft. Lavishly illustrated.

Why is it that Yefim Gordon is able to produce such massive and authoritative books when the US aviation press seems to be slowly dying?

1) He has a large picture library
2) Copyright of Soviet era materials is unclear
3) Copyright laws seem lax in Russia generally.
4) He isn't afraid to lift large sections of material from other published books.

I've heard 2 and 3 before. If #4 is true, then why doesn't somebody go after his UK publisher for copyright infringement?

How does it compare with the earlier work by Sergey Kommissarov?

The publications in question are Russian language ones. It may not be worth their while.

I also need to know to decide if I should order Gordon's book.

Did anyone actually take a look at the Amazon entry? The authors are Gordon and Kommissarov, and the descriptions says it is an expanded and enhanced version of the first edition. So it sounds like a collaboration, or at least an author-sanctioned follow-on to the original.

It is one thing to say it is expanded and enhanced, but another to justify whether that 'enhancement' justifies the purchase - hence my asking if anyone has looked at both and can provide a comparison (beyond just page quantity which can be misleading).

Regards,

Greg

I have both. There's a ton more information in the new volume. Lots more photos, line drawings, text. The new book is hardcover and it is HEAVY. I was surprised when I picked it up.

Thanks Blackstar,

I think I'm going to order a copy. Just one more question: is there any expanded info about the Beriev aircraft carrier ekranoplan?

I opened it up and photographed pages at random for you. Here they are.

Good price/performance ratio!!! B)

I'd add that I didn't choose pages based upon how pretty they are--that's an entirely random sample. So pretty much every page of the book has illustrations. And the thing is HEAVY.

I didn't find any, but that doesn't mean that it's not there. I don't know much about the subject, so I don't know how to look through the book for that info. There's a whole chapter on Beriev's designs, and then several paragraphs on each of the proposed versions.

Crecy is showing a "greatly expanded" edition of this book to be released in late October.
