Vought (Chance Vought, LTV) Designations

As I promised in a post in The Bar section, they come from an old Docavia book by Bernard Millot. Enjoy. The numebr to the right of the description refers to the page number in the book.

I have this list in very clearly views,if someone wants ?.

Well , all Vought projects pre- 1945 are mentioned on " American Secret Projects 1" ( Fighters , Bombers and Attack Aircraft 1937 - 1945) - search in for " Chance Vought ".

By the way, there was another series, maybe began from number 100 ?.

My dear PaulMM,

there are many designations, carried the numbers from 100 up to 300 or more, and
it's not related to V series, and they had been sent by two or three members here,
maybe just an inhouse system ?,such as;

More likely to be a typo for XF2U-1.
Apart from the uncowled engine, very similar.

Less likely, in my opinion. The VE-series started in 1918, the single XF2U-1 was built in 1929.
In Avions Vought by Gerard Moran, 1978, a VE-19 is shown, as well as a VE-22. Both unstaggered biplanes. Unfortunately, Moran doesn't write when Vought produced the last VE-design.

I'm curious about the sub-type suffixes applied to Lewis & Vought Corporation's internal 'VE' designations. Does anyone have a list?

Pure speculation but I'm wondering about the following:

- F = Flotation gear
- G = Grain hydrovane (installed before wheels) [1]
- H = Hydroplane (ie floatplane)
- S = Special (??) or Single-seat (??)
- W = Wright Aeronautical-made engine [2]

Of these, 'S' is certainly a reach and I'm happy to be corrected by someone who knows better.

[1] Named after RNAS Grain on the Isle of Grain in east Kent. The Naval Aircraft Experimental Constructive Depot at RNAS Grain was the origin of the hydrovane design used to safely ditch wheeled aircraft at sea.

[2] So, 'W' indicating the manufacturer of the 200 hp Lawrance J-1 radial engine rather than its designer.[/U]
