Someone emailed me for information on this aircraft so i thought we might as well start a thread on it.

The GP 9 was designed by Bo Lundberg during his time at Götaverken as a competing design against the ASJA L-12 to become the J 19 for the Swedish air force. ASJA's L-12 got the trial designation P 9A (P = prov, "trial") while Götaverken's design got P 9B. (GP9 = Götaverken Prov 9?)

From my notes, the GP 9 was to house a Bristol Taurus II engine with some 1400 hp. A tender on September 15 1939 from GV to the SAF offered a top speed of 682 km/h. Armament was proposed as two 8 mm ksp m/22 (Colt .30 AN/M2) machine guns and two 13,2 mm akan m/39 (13,2 mm FN Browning) shell firing guns in the wings (EDIT: i now queston this as the competing L-12 was to feature 4x 13,2 mm guns + 2x 8 mm guns, GP9 armament was probably 4x 13,2 mm guns).

The GP 9 was slightly more expencive than the AJSA L-12 but the SAF was willing to order a prototype if possible. However, at the end of 1939, GV announced that they were to stop aircraft production, putting the project soly on Bo Lundberg, who then launched "AB Svenska Flygplansverken" (AFV) to produce it. Long story short, AFV had no money and without financial aid it closed its doors as soon as they had opened. The inability to buy British engines after the start of the war lead to the effective cancellation of either J 19-project (L-12 and GP 9) by 1940.

But then god said there would be plane, and there was plane. Due to the US embargo on Sweden from 1940, the SAF forced the project into drive again, as they needed new fighters ASAP and were willing to set up a state factory if needed. Lundberg then redesigned the GP 9 into a part-wooden Construction for the much weaker TWC-3 engine of 1050 hp, becoming the FFVS J 22. Lundberg states that only the general shape of the GP 9 remained for the J 22 at the end of the day.

I just noticed that the blueprint shows 4 equally sized guns. Could it be an error by the artist for the J 22-book by leaning too far into the J 22-2?

Looking at the specifications for the L-12 (4x 13,2 mm guns + 2x 8 mm guns), i now queston whether the GP9 was to have 2x 8 mm and 2x 13,2 mm guns and not just 4x 13,2 mm guns. If anyone has documents on the matter that would be sweet.
