SNCASE (Sud-Est) SE.200 six-engined flying boat
« on: March 22, 2010, 04:51:29 pm »
Dear Flying-Finn, here is the SNCASE SE-200 for you, also known as the Aérosudest SE-200 and originally designed by Lioré & Olivier as the H-49 Amphitrite for the 1936 Transatlantic Flying Boat Competition.

Actually, it's not "Secret" and it's not a "Project", so I'm not even sure it should be posted here......

Here is some press from the 11th May 1946 issue of Les Ailes celebrating the first flight of the second SE-200 F-BAIY but oddly showing a picture of the first SE-200 F-BAHE.

Actually, F-BAIY was the third SE-200 airframe, but the second to be flown. The unregistered second aircraft was 80% complete when it was destroyed in its hangar during an Allied bombing raid at Marignane.

The first aircraft F-BAHE was confiscated by nazi germans after the occupation of Vichy France and taken away to Lake Constance where it was destroyed by RAF bombers.

The fourth aircraft was sold for scrap in 1950 when 70% complete......

and Flying-Finn, here are the requested drawings taken from the November 1998 issue of Le Fana de l'Aviation. The drawings are by Joël Mesnard and I have removed the various photogarphic images and captions to make the drawings clearer.

Of note; the very, very Lioré & Olivier style wing planform and tail-fin profiles. Note how the post-war completed aircraft had the "Groupe Standard" style Gnôme-Rhône GR14 26/27 engines in power-egg mountings on much longer nacelles.

Ohh! I just found them here! Thank you again, dear Caravellarella!!
Amazing flying boat! Seems to be a very perfect among the other flying boats of that time!
Thank you again for explanation of some facts from the history of SE-200.
I'll look for my archives in order to add some photos here.
I've read about destroying of the second prototype and about trials of  the French big flying boats at the Lake Constance.

Thank you Skybolt. Actually a relatively unimportant aircraft, and a massive waste of expenditure and effort. As designed, the SE-200 could only take 20 passengers on transatlantic routes, taking 20 hours to do so. The opulent ocean liner-style main deck arrangement must have weighed tons.

Judging by the number of aerodynamic tweaks used, the SE-200 must have had some drag and directional problems.

I recall reading that F-BAIY porpoised on landing, once, and actually dived into/below the lake's surface. It resurfaced, but the leading edges of the flying surfaces were done for......

Here are some more shots of F-BAIY; in others' aerial views, you can see that the large panels on the upper surface of the wings behind each engine appear to be fabric-covered.
