Any landing you can walk away from, is a good one.

I am trying to update my database and have come up against a wall.

Does anyone have any information on the flying boats built by the Orlogsværftet for the Danish Naval Air Service between 1919 and 1920.

The designations for these are are follows:

FB II, FB III, FB IV, FB V and HB I.

Any information would be helpful.

saturncanuck,

You may already have the following from online sources. If not, I hope it is useful or of interest.

The latter has photos of the F.B. I, F.B. III, F.B. IV, and H.B. I. Different images of the F.B. I, F.B. III, and H.B. I appear on Johnny Balsved's Danish Naval History site. The restored F.B. I is on the Teknisk Museum site.

Orlogsværftets OV-flyvebåde F.B. I

The OV-flyvebåde F.B. Is were really the two Donnet-Lévêque boats imported in 1913. These two-seat, trainer/scouts (built by Franco-British Aviation Co, Paris) were originally named "Mågen" (Seagull) and "Ternen" (Tern). (Mågen becomes a generic name for all Marinens Flyvevæsen flying boats, later combined with an airframe identifying number.)

In 1914, Orlogsværftets rebuilt and re-winged the Donnet-Lévêque boats (reportedly improving flight characteristics). At this stage, the names "Mågen 1" and "Mågen 2" were applied. (On 12 Sept 1915, "Mågen 2" was dropped from a hoist at Copenhagen and the damaged airframe was later discarded.)

In 1921 Orlogsværftets, received the rights to the design and the designation F.B.I (Flyvebådsbiplan I) was retrospectively applied.

The F.B. III was an original flying boat design of the same single-engined, pusher layout as the Donnet-Lévêque design and the serving F.B. II. The first the F.B. III was completed in October 1915. Ten airframes were produced, all which served at the Flyvebåds station in Copenhagen. The type was in service from 1916-to-1924. The F.B. IIIs were powered by a range of engines.

Orlogsværftets OV-flyvebåde F.B. IV

The F.B. IV was a more powerful version (200 hp Curtiss) of the F.B. III. Only two airframes were built but the numbering is confusing. The original Mågen 21 (O.V.15, May 1917) was replaced by another Mågen 21 (O.V.21, July 1918). In September 1918, Mågen 22 (O.V.23), was created by rebuilding the original Mågen 21/O.V.15.
