You guys might not know who George Spangenberg was.

He was at the US Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics, then at NAVAIR, then later BuWeps for several decades.

He's pretty well known for being a leading anti-F-111 person, and later helping set up the F-14 program.

But what wasn't known was that he saved EVERYTHING that crossed his desk.

When he left, it was accessioned over to the National Archives; and recently (2007), a large portion of it was declassified and made public for the first time.

I found this out by checking out the "Red Binders" on the Textural Floor; and found a line entry in it saying:

"Proposal" Files for Airplanes, Helicopters and Missiles 1934-1961
RG 72 (Bureau/Dept of Aeronautics)
UD 1048
ID 163451
Sec Class: C
NAII 631 74/63/04 to 75/9/07
1 to 676 Containers (!!!)
ACC NN3-72-86-4

Out of sheet anal-intensiveness, I pulled the very last box in the series and worked my way backwards.

Which was very lucky.

The last box turned out to contain the folder index for the whole series.

And when I say index, I do mean index. As in 360+ separated pages.

I made a copy of it via my camera -- it took me about 15 minutes of clicking the shutter.

LINK TO INDEX

Anyway, from reading the index; the boxes are arranged with no real reason or rhyme.

While like stuff is generally kept together, there is a very schizophrenic method of organization.

For example, you go from Helicopter proposals to the Bomber Defense Missile, then back to Helicopters.

Or you get folders and boxers of "N-180 Observation airplane"; and then out of nowhere, a proposal for V-408 Crusader fighter bomber, then back to observation, then wow an AEW.

BIG IMPORTANT NOTE

The entire 676 box series wasn't totally declassified! There are still significant gaps in declassification, meaning quite a bit of material is locked off to us.

I started to build a more cleaner finding aid a while ago; but sort of gave up after about 20 boxes.

Boxes 601-End

Green means Unclassified, RED is classified.

wow, Ryan, seems like you're going to be busy for a while!

Oh my...

Some absolute treasures await in there!

Designations-wise, there's already plenty of new stuff here to keep one busy. Thank you so much, Ryan!

Not to overstate [much], this is incredibly important to our understanding of the US Navy aircraft competitions!

For example, a totally random image pick out of Ryan's selection yields:

Boxes 86 though 88: (circa 1950)

McDonnell Model Model 74 VA Class ASW
Cessna Model 306 VA Class ASW

These being among the losing competitors to the Grumman S2F!

Excellent work!

Funny you mention these two, they are exactly the two projects I almost quoted in the above post! I also noticed the Republic NP-49, NP-50 and NP-52 (three projects we've seen on this forum), but also stuff like the Beechcraft 84 or the Boeing 704 that have never appeared anywhere else!

Yeah, all this stuff is pretty impressive in terms of the light it will eventually shed on Navy competitions. These scans alone will most certainly keep me busy for a while...

Yes indeed. It reminds me I was thinking of trying to find a better solution for designation lists on the forum - perhaps a linked wiki or something.

Okay... I have started a huge listing work for every aircraft type or project listed in the 370+ pages photographed by Ryan. So far I've reached the 100th scan, which means 200 pages done already and 433 entries... No details yet, apart from the manufacturer and model, if known, but I will eventually enrich the listing with box numbers, report numbers and so forth. Truly some interesting stuff in there from the major manufacturers... and also forgotten manufacturers/bidders such as Rheem, Wilford, Pardel, Medvedeff (no kidding!), Higgins or Herrick, to name a few.

Done. I've gone through the whole list and isolated 1033 separate entries (there will be more eventually, but the others are other files of already listed models). Quite a few of these do not have a model number specified (especially the Convair ones) and therefore the following rough lists contains only those designs which are more or less precisely identified (most are aircraft or helicopters, but not all):

Nice work.

Thanks Paul. I'm slowly comparing/consolidating all the data therein with what I already had and what exists on the forum and have started updating (or creating) the corresponding Navy Specification topics accordingly.

By the way, should a topic by the name of "US Navy Outline Specification OS-117 (VA - ASW)" be located in "Designation systems" or "Postwar Aircraft Projects"? I have seen both.

Its pretty simple. A list of Outline Specifications should be in Designation Systems (as it is a designation system). A list of projects designed to to an Outline Specification isn't a designation system, its a collection of projects, so it belongs in the Projects section.

Okay, I get it. I will create further topics where appropriate. Meanwhile, could you possibly move my topic on OS-117 to the appropriate section? Thanks.

HERE IT IS.

A 28-page condensed index of "the Index"...

A few assumptions here and there on dates and programs based on existing data but it's a good place to start any further research on the Spangenberg goldmine.

NOTES:

  • Parentheses indicate additional information, sometimes details interpolated from similar entries in other boxes.
  • When several dates pertained to the same aircraft type in the same box, I picked the earliest one.

I will of course correct and update the file when and if necessary. And having the whole thing on Excel, I can provide the same index organized by manufacturer, by date or by program, if anyone shows interest in it.

Gentleman...any ladies...blond rocket or aerodynamics scientist engineers plugged in too?

Anybody discover what the Bell MX-2276 BoMi project had attached for a Model Number? it seems that of the goodies from Bell I have, even the project books did not refer to it by Model Number, yet other Mfrs often did for a particular proposal.

Also, 2nd rewrite for the EOMSF article...6,000 woids, 105 or so feetnotes, yaddi, ya. This is that classified USAF plan kicked around at very high levels (USAF Staff) for an armed Space Force as a classified series of studies from a number of firms (our Utah dude knows the hard way), answered. While such material the SR in particular is still classified, one Key Doc slipped through declassification process to reveal its name...EOMSF...Earth Orbital Military Space Force. Rummaging through all my "stuff," boxes of, I managed to connect a number of dots to present a brief history of USAF interest in space stuff, then presented the declassified SR data and connect all of the various studies that would contribute to such a force, that probably would have splintered off from SAC who originally would have fought tooth-nail (long as Le May was around anyway), to operate.

There is all kinds of stuff, robot, DS, methods of destroying enemy space assets as it is stiffly called, by means of "termination devices." There will be probably 3 dozen drawings to back up this agony that took 3-4 months to research, write, and now, rewritten.

That blankety blank military editor of mine simply won't get off this "but your peers will challenge you, so reference this guy and that one, etc. I swear PHd's are not easy to communicate via simple english language, breathing such rarified academic air if it is air.

I will see if time permits to copy some more wierd space stuff and send it along.

Dangerous Bomi-Writer...like when shaving, trying to cut veggies and fish, like a real klutz, etc.
Also, take a peek at Allen Ury's site Fantastic Plastic...see the nice Bell BoMi MX-2276 kit he made form my material. it is very nice quality kit. The original model still exists and has since it was built sometime around 1953-1954 period. I have sinister photos of it as wood, prior to being painted, nasty looking really. That is it. Say; any photos around of that pyramid shaped Boost-Glider proposed inm England during the late 1950s?? Have fun and stay chill.

Anybody discover what the Bell MX-2276 BoMi project had attached for a Model Number? it seems that of the goodies from Bell I have, even the project books did not refer to it by Model Number, yet other Mfrs often did for a particular proposal.

They often do, yes. But not always. For instance, between 1947 and 1950 it seems that Convair didn't assign a model number to any of their projects, only to built types. Bell apparently always allocated a D-for Design number, at least, and proceeded to a proper Model number when the project was aimed for production. This being said, I believe BoMi is different in two aspects:
- Highly confidential material --> No model number, no questions.
- Space project --> probably not included in Bell's Model numbering system.

Been over a week now since I shared the 28-page companion document I made for the Spangenberg Index. Not a single reaction since then... It took me several days to compile, and was one of the most demanding documents I ever worked on, so it's kind of frustrating to find that no-one seems to have bothered (unless no-one noticed... don't know which is worse).

I'm not doing that stuff to get any kudos for it, obviously. It's out of passion for the material and with the hope that my work will help researchers get around the boxes more easily when looking for something specific. However it would have been nice to have the occasional feedback about it.

I'm currently preparing more similar documents for other online resources, with the hope of eventually creating an all-encompassing index that will make it possible to list all the available resources on any specific aircraft type. I just hope someone out there is sufficiently interesting for my work to be of some use...

A usefull search tool but a bit hidden in the avalanche of information..

I looked at Robo / Bomi stuff but all that early Bell stuff was helicopters.

Wow
Great find and great effort gents
Especially Stargazer`s efforts of going through the whole list and isolated 1033 separate entries!!

Do we have any pictures/drawings of the mentioned McDonnell Model 74 and the Cessna Model 306 VA Class ASW aircraft??

Regards
Pioneer

Gentlemen, I know I've been remiss in my "Crazy Researcher" label -- but I got burned out on researching, there's just so much stuff, and so little time/hard drive space to store it all.

I recently was pointed to a new accession at NARA College Park, and within about 45 minutes; I managed to extract all the data for all 1,095 items in that collection from NARA's website and put it into an excel file, which I'm attaching to this post.

Here's the basic data on the collection, which I'm informally designating "Spangenberger II"

This is beyond fabulous! Thank you so much for sharing, Mark.

If I was still a bachelor without kids, I'd no doubt hop into an aircraft on my next holidays to come over and go through these with my digital camera!

Among the interesting finds in this document:

Military designations to be added
  • F3L Bell Model 2000/D-188A (apparently not an invention of historians...)
  • BT3D-1 early designation of Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark

My precise sentiment as well.

I'm a bachelor without kids. And I have a good digital camera. And I have a lot of free time.

But I have no money.

Hi,

Is there any info on the entry Radioplane XKD3R from Box 571 in the Spangenberg file? I'm curious.

As a professional researcher, at work, I know how much time this takes. It can't be done in a short period of time. It just can't. I know there are published authors here and this represents several volumes of published material. It can't be digested properly in a week either. Computers are getting faster but the human mind is not. My sincere thanks.
