Hello everybody.

Can somebody possibly help me ? I was reading Ted Nomura`s "Luftwaffe 46 Luftsturm Vol 2". In the near of story's end I noticed a strange Soviet bomber. I has halved cockpit like two eyes. Engines reminds me little like PE-8. The weaponry seems to be remote controlled. Is the plane pure fiction or is it a "real" paperproject ?

Sincerely yours T Försti

Re: Odd Soviet bomber

Describe the cockpit in other words. Also the tail plane...

Re: Odd Soviet bomber

Sounds like the Tupolev 64, the project was canceled from on high in favour of copying the B-29.

Re: Odd Soviet bomber

Yes, Tu-64 fits the bill for the cockpit description.

The outboard engine installation resembles that of the Pe-8. Otherwise not much similarity to the big Petlyakov.

http://www.airwar.ru/enc_e/bomber/tu64.html

BTW, airwar.ru calls the Tupolev "TU-64 (TU-10)". Duplication of designations or just confusion with the late Tu-2 derivative?

Re: Odd Soviet bomber

Thank you for everybody,

It is certainly TU - 64. Tail is similar in the comics and in the picture. Cockpit with two separate places can also be seen in the Apophenia pictures.

Sincerely yours T Försti

Re: Odd Soviet bomber

on putnam book of tupolev , about tu-64 there are a little variations : 9 cannons of 20 mm than 8 cannons of 23 mm , and 5 ton of bomb and range of 3000 km ( i suppose with bombs) well probably there was two variants projected about defensive armament !

Hi Tomi
A pleasure to greet you again!
Some years ago I asked Ted about this and he told me it was just a Soviet project
Please see attached profile ans text.
I am looking for information on the undercarriage of the VALMET "Puuska".
Has anything been published about the subject in Finland lately?
All the best

Info on the Tupolev '64' and Myasischev '202' & '302' heavy bomber projects

Hello gents

I came across this picture the other night.

It’s the Soviet Tupolev ‘64’ (Tu-64?) Heavy Bomber design study, which the Soviets were working on at the time that three prized workable and fully intact Boeing B-29 Superfortress landed in the Soviet Union during WWII.

What a win fall for both the Soviet military and its aviation bureaus!!!!!

Well every one knows the rest – the B-29 was reversed engineered to become the Tu-4 ‘Bull’, of which over 1,200 would be built in the Soviet Union and PRC.

Has there been a forum on the ‘64’ Heavy Bomber project??
Does anyone have any history, specifications, profiles and art work of this bomber?
Was there any mock-ups or prototypes built?

Also talking to a mate about this topic he said that Myasischev studied a similar advanced heavy bomber that he said was the Myasischev ‘202’ and ‘302’ projects

Looking forward to your feedback

Regards

Pioneer

Here is some more info about Tu-64 in Russian:
http://www.airwar.ru/enc/bomber/tu64.html

And here is a later version of this project. The drawing is from Vladimir Rigmant's material in "Aviatsia i Kosmonavtika" magazine, No. 4-1998.

Re: Info on the Tupolev '64' and Myasischev '202' & '302' heavy bomber projects

As it was typical for Tupolev OKB, a civil passenger version of Tu-64 was also projected. This 50-52-seat aircraft was called Project 66 or Tu-66. The inicial design was made in Autumn, 1944, and the works were stopped at the same time as on the military version. The drawing is from "Aviatsia i Kosmonavtika" No. 7-1998.

The Avicopress site looks interesting, but it is password protected. I have tried to open an account, but with seemingly no response. Any advice Gregory? Should I mail them a couple cartons of Marlboros?

When I tried to register in Avicopress.ru, I also didn't receive any responce from them. I thought they refused me for unknown reasons. But onetime I tried to visit their site again... and it appeared that all the info is accessible for me. It was a surprise! So, maybe when you'll visit them next time, the access will be open too?

I haven't visited the site in some time. It seems to have routine server issues. I've been trying to contact him, even thru the forum's PMs regarding some of his booklets that I ordered back in Nov last year. I didn't pay for them yet, but I've never gotten contact over the last 3 or so months, either. Keep trying, it's a neat site.

avicopress currently doesn't send confirmation on account activation (so it goes with technical issues)
it doesn't mean that account requests are not monitored
you can try to login back already in two or three hours, but with probability of 99% you account will be approved in next 24 hours (Konstantin sleeps sometimes, too - he's not your Stig)

Hi! Wind tunnel test model of early single tail stabilizer design and later twin tail stabilizer design.

http://militaryrussia.ru/blog/index-47.html

"The plane, a TU-64/64 TU-10

Selection of schemes is under aerodynamic aircraft conducted a purge of models in TSAGI. Design started in May 1944, in August 1944, RAF requirements adjusted downward plane altitude requirements. In September 1944, g. full scale aircraft completed. In February 1945, the AIR FORCE requirements once again adjusted-in the crew of the aircraft radar operator was added. Layout April 27, 1945 approved For aircraft AIR FORCE designation was reserved "Tu-10". In mid-1945 g. pilot production preparations for producing bomber prototypes, izgootovlenie equipment for production aircraft, started the production of technical drawings of the project. Development stopped in connection with creating a copy of the B-29 Superfortress bomber, the Tu-4. The official order of the USSR MAI on the cessation of the development went out April 16, 1947-simultaneously with the completion of the first Tu-4. All of these TACTICAL TU-64-project."

Re: Info on the Tupolev '64' and Myasischev '202' & '302' heavy bomber projects

G'day gents
Just stumbled across and watched a documentary 'Stealing the Superfortress on YouTube https://youtu.be/ALx6UEekQPs
It was interesting to note that in the documentary Tupolev himself said 'that his
Tupolev 64 Heavy Bomber design would have been better than the B-29 Superfortress, if he'd been allowed to build it, as opposed to copying the B-29'

Interesting!

With respect, he would hardly have said anything else. "Yeah, my design was terrible, good thing I got a US plane to copy".

Re: Info on the Tupolev '64' and Myasischev '202' & '302' heavy bomber projects

Yeah, I appreciate that Paul, but I'm looking at it subjectively. After all, the Soviet's could and did at times surpass Western perceived technological superiority. ;)

"It's the transport version of the Tupolev Tu-64 which was also designed as a bomber. That one was not influenced by Boeing, but it was the design that Tupolev had been working on independantly until he was ordered to discontinue it in favour of pursuing the line of aircraft that began with the captured B-29 as the Tu-4 and ended with the Tu-95 Bear."
