A design very similar to the US Fairchild XC-120 Packplane, the
SIAI-Marchetti SM-105. A twin or four engined high wing transport
with only a rudimentary fuselage, housing the cockpit. For carrying
the payload detachable pods would have been used.

Uh, I have everything on the SM-105. Now I am in Rome, let me come back. Actually the project is from 1948.

Well, as it still is today, german magazines are often not really up to date ... :D
It was a series of articles about the postwar italian aviation.
 
Looks like the view would have been terrible from the cockpit for landing with the cargo pod on.

But probably much better, than the view ahead from most tail draggers. After a tragic airshow
accident last year, where a light aircraft was cut into pieces by the prop pf a Grumman avenger,
an investigation revealed, that the Avenger pilot could have seen the other aircraft only, if it
would have been at least 73,7 m away !

I'm back, here I am. Let's strat witha couple f images I have at hand. They are of the windtunnel model, first without the pod, second in complete configuration. The aircraft could fly w/o the pod. The aircraft would have taken off and land in an almost flat mode, like the B.52. The pod had landing gears. AH, naturally, these are never seen before images. 8)

This seems to be a larger four engined variant...
 
Yep. Actually Marchetti preferred this last variant. There was a third one, with a fixed keeled pod, tendered for the Italian Air Force amphibious SAR requirement of 1948 (no aircraft bought, they stayed with the CANT Z-506 till late '50s). I'm scanning other drawings.

Hmm it would be interesting to see these 'other drawings' that you were scanning four years ago ;)...
