Just got the book and of course I went to the later chapters. Doesn't sound too keen on F-14/Phoenix versus the Backfire. This article from Naval War College Review wasn't in the sources for the book.

He is more respectful of the Tomcat.

Is there something specific you took from the article?
Do you have Friedman's book?
 
I missed this book when it came out and only bought a copy a few days ago.
Concentrating on the carrier fighters in the RN and USN it contains a lot of information that is new to me. The most tantalising is the saga of the Buccaneer as an RN fighter. As usual with Friedman the text is more impressive than the illustrations but I am glad I have a copy.
