I came across this article that covers a number of different designs that have made it to a thread on this site and for which there is no obvious reason they did not make it to production except the nearly universal "lack of funding".

I found it interesting and it noted a few designs I did not realize actually made it to flyable hardware - Spectrum S-33 being one example.
