Some details and images of Fokker Ontwerp No's,
(from 'Aeroplane Monthly', February 1989, pp. 121-124)

Ontwerp 104 :-

Mid 1934 high winged, twin engined aircraft, designed
to carry 16 passengers over 600 miles at 185 mph.
Alclad fuselage, wooden wings, area 947ft2
Engines, two Jumo 4 although the drawing,
see below, shows radials.

Ontwerp 105-107 :-

Derived from 104. 105, wings fitted with de-icers,
lighter construction, engines two Wright Cyclone F-2,
see above.
106, low-winged variation, with enlarged wing, area 1033ft2.
107, wing as 106, but high mounted.

Ontwerp 115 :-

Heavy Bomber, warload 6-8,000lbs of bombs in centre
fuselage.
Crew 7, 5 of which were to be gunners. Nose and dorsal
positions armed with a single 20mm cannon, the
remainder armed with single machine guns.
Engines, four Gnome-Rhone engines of 1,110hp each
Max speed with 6,000lbs of bombs, 230mph.

Ontwerp 127 :-

Four engined (Pegasus X, of 870hp), bomber/transport
with deep fuselage. Span 126ft. Payload, 8,000lbs of bombs,
or 36 passengers in luxury accommodation, see image below,
showing two level passenger accommodation, and roomy toilets,
at it's widest, the fuselage was to be some 11'6" wide,
and 16' high.
The article states that the unspecified fuel load 'gives the
impression that it (the type 127) would not have had great
endurance.'

Ontwerp 129 :-

Precursor of the Fokker G.1. March 1936. Main difference
is smaller nacelle for the crew. It is stated that lateral control
was to be by means of spoilers, allowing for larger flaps, in
turn making landing easier, however, the drawing clearly
shows ailerons. Likewise the engines are stated to be
400hp 16-cylinder radials, whereas the drawing shows what
appear to be direct-drive inverted Vee-type engines.
Armament, two 20mm cannon, plus several machine guns.
1200lbs of bombs could be carried.

Ontwerp 135 :-

'Super G.1'. 70' span, all metal construction. Engines, two
Bristol Mercury VIII with constant speed propellors.
Max speed approx. 270mph, all-up weight 16,000lbs, 2,000lbs
of which could be bombload. Crew four.

Ontwerp 132 :-

Designed to compare with DC-4 prototype (), but uneconomic
payload (twenty passengers), and outdated technically.
The metal nose and rear fuselage were to be bolted to the wooden
centre fuselage!!!

Ontwerp 160 :-

Burnelli type aircraft, both airliner and bomber versions, with
trans atlantic range. Intended to fly at high altitudes, to reduce
drag, and weather avoidance. Span 175' wing area 2,850ft2.
Speed 200mph at 23,000ft. Enduarance was calculated to be
23hr nonstop, with 39% fuel reserve.
Payload 26 passengers in luxury accommodation.
Engines were to be five DB 600H, though bomber version
drawing shows radial powerplants. Bomber fitted with four bomb
bays, total warload approx. 10,000lbs. Note the crazy 'nose' turret
positioning.

Ontwerp 180 :-

Another Burnelli type, similar in size to the 160, this time using Jumo
211 Ba engines.(Again, the image appears to show radial engines)
Speed 205mph at 29,500'. All metal construction.

Ontwerp 210 :-

Yet another Burnelli type, this time larger, span 238', all-up weight
120,00lbs, payload of up to 30 tons, depending on range.

Ontwerp 172, 174,188,189, 190, 196 :-

Twin engined amphibians similar to Grumman Goose, see image below.

Ontwerp 257, 275 :-

Design ancestors of th F.27 Friendship.

cheers,
Robin.

Those ontwerp 160 and 180 designs look a lot like Burnelli lifting-bodies.
I wonder if there was any licence arrangement or similar relation?

(And if not, wasn't Vince Burnelli famous for suing everyone in sight in such cases?)

Hi,

P.204 was a single engined biplane aircraft developed from P.203
but smaller and probably a more modern design.

I found out the time with the Fokker was dating with V.F.W. three Designations, which may perhaps belong more to the Fokker-system.
1) V.F.W. T.291 trainer aircraft from 1970
2) V.F.W. P.301 of 1971 four-engine airliner
3) V.F.W. P.277 attack helicopter

Hi,

also P.204J was an alternative to the P.240 jet fighter trainer, which the
P.240K became S-14.

Hi,

P.161 was a two seat recce aircraft, based on C.X with Daimler Benz engine,
project only.

Hi,

Ontwerp 131 was C.XIII-W
Ontwerp 134 was T.VIII-W

http://www.avianet.eu/meer_nieuws.php?ID=4935

The ever-generous Lark sent me a copy of 'Vliegtuigontowerpen 1920-1944' by Frits Gerdessen. I've done a rough translation of that Luchtvaartkennis article.

Gerdessen discusses overall Fokker designation styles but I'll cover that elsewhere. He identifies an attempt at establishing an Ontwerp designation style in 1920-1925. For the most part, temporary compound letter designations were applied which would be abandoned once 'firmer' project designations were applied. There were also Ontwerpen assigned descriptive names for which no project numbers are know (or, perhaps, were ever assigned).

It was not until July 1934 that another rationalization of Fokker project designations was attempted. This established a series of Ontwerpnummer beginning (as far as it is known) with Ontwerp 101. Unfortunately, there is no information about this first (and many later) projects -- much archival material having been lost during WW2.

Gerdessen notes that not all Fokker designs or types constructed in the 1934-40 period were assigned an Ontwerp number. Examples are the C.XIV-W/C.14W, T.V/T.5 (which went through multiple iterations), S.IX/S.9, and the unbuilt C.XXI/C.12, T.7W, S.VIII/S.8, and S.X/S.10 projects.

I've stayed fairly true to Gerdessen's original presentation with a few exceptions. I have rationalized his Ontwerpen met een NAAM section .. and hopefully simplified it. Under the later Ontwerpen listing, where Gerdessen italicized types actually built, I've place [Project] before the description of designs not built. To aid in internet 'searchability', I've also added 'Ontwerp' before each design number.

When Gerdessen uses pk (paardenkracht or metric horsepower), I have simply substituted hp. Where he uses Indie, I have substituted NEI (for Netherlands East Indies). When Ned. was used, I've spelled out Nederland or Nederlandsche. In a few minor cases, clarifiers have been added [inside square brackets]. For more details on the various Ontwerpen, see Fokker Letter Designations.

A few notes on abbreviations may be useful for non-Dutch readers. Abbreviations used include:

f = florijn or gulden (guilder) currency

IML = Inspectie der Militaire Luchtvaart (Military Aviation Inspectorate)*

KLM = Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij N.V. (Royal Airlines Company)

KNIL = Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army)

KNILM = Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij, NEI airline

LA/KNIL = Luchtvaartafdeling-Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force) name prior to March 1939 (see ML/KNIL, below)

LVA = Luchtvaartafdeeling (Army Aviation)

LVA/ML = Luchtvaart Afdeeling/Militaire Luchtvaart (Aviation Department/Military Aviation), full name

MLD = Marine Luchtvaartdienst (Naval Air Service)

ML/KNIL = Militaire Luchtvaart van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force) name from March 1939 (see LA/KNIL, above)

MvD = Ministrie van Defensie (Dutch Ministry of Defence)

Tek. = Tekening (Drawing)

Only four people are mentioned in the text, named by their initials. A.H.G. Fokker (or just A.H.G.) is, of course, Anton Herman Gerard 'Anthony' Fokker. J.E. v.Tijen refers to Jacobus ('Co') Elisa van Tijen, (onder)directeur of Fokker in 1935-1941 (a Dutch aviation pioneer, 'Co' van Tijen made the first solo flight from the Netherlands to the NEI). A. Plesman refers to Dr. Albert Plesman, the founder and president of KLM. A. Gassner refers to designer, Alfred A. Gassner. [2]

_______________________________

[1] Can also stand for the Inspecteur der Militaire Luchtvaart, head of the IML. The Inspectie der Militaire Luchtvaart was formed in 1935. Its role was to coordinate between the LVA and the LVB (Luchtvaartbedrijf or Technical Branch) - formerly the Technische Dienst van de LVA.

[2] Austrian by birth, American Alfred Gassner designed for Aviatik (B.III), Fokker (F-11A), Junkers (Ju 88), AFF (unbuilt P 7 'Scout', later Saab), Fairchild (Model 91) and Duramold (AT-21A), etc.

Ontwerpen

1934

Ontwerp 101 - NO DATA

Ontwerp 102 - [Project] Lockheed Electra military variant, aka CL-2m, as an attack aircraft, bomber, and strategic reconnaissance aircraft.

Ontwerp 103 - NO DATA

In July/August 1934 five designs for a twin-engined airliner were made - Ontwerp 104 to 108 - following a 21 May 1934 request for an alternative to the Douglas DC-2. All proposed aircraft featured a wooden wing, metal fuselage, a retractable landing gear, and room for 16 passengers. The wing had a single main spar. The wingspan was 25.60 m for the Ontwerp 104 and 105; 27.00 m for the Ontwerp 106, 107, and 108. A similar type was designed at De Schelde in 1934/35 - this S.6 was projected with radial motors and Jumo motors.

Ontwerp 104 (A) - [Project] High-winged airliner with 2 x 712 hp Wright Cyclone F2 radial engines.

Ontwerp 105 (A) - [Project] As Ontwerp 104, with Jumo 4 diesel engines.

Ontwerp 106 - [Project] Low-winged with Jumo 4 diesel engines.

Ontwerp 107 - [Project] As Ontwerp 105 but slightly larger. High-winged with Jumo 4 engines.

Ontwerp 108 - [Project] Like Ontwerp 107 but with higher-powered Jumo 4 diesel engines.

Ontwerp 109 - [Project] 1934/35. B.5 three-engined flying boat for the MLD, also projected with twin engines (Ontwerp 109C). This design number was awarded in the summer of 1934, while the application was sent in January 1935. The plant drawings were made in March 1935. So Fokker was informed in time. Although the MLD requested an all-metal airframe, Fokker projected a wooden wing. According to the wishes of the MLD, the flying boat was equipped with Stummeln, as with the [in-service] Dornier Wal. The Ontwerp 109 was also projected with wing floats and with two engines. The MLD chose the Dornier Do 24.

Ontwerp 110 - NO DATA, possibly design for Fokker D.XIX.

Ontwerp 111 - [Project] Twin-engine Luchtkruiser (air cruiser), designed to LVA specification. At the 1934 Paris Salon Ontwerp 111 was offered as the T.5. This type number was re-used, but the final T.5 was a completely different design.

Ontwerp 112 - Low-winged fighter plane for the Colonies. Built as D.21.

Ontwerp 113 - NO DATA

Ontwerp 114 - NO DATA

Ontwerp 115 - [Project] Four-engined bomber with the wing of the F.36, designed for Czechoslovakia, Turkey, and Russia. T.VI.

Ontwerp 116 - [Project] Twin-engined airliner. 712 hp Wright Cylcone. Span 22 m. No drawing known. Presumably 12 passengers.

Ontwerp 117 - [Project] Two-engine airliner. 712 hp Wright Cylcone. Span 25.40 m. No drawing known. Probably 16 passengers.
